Advantages: They taste so yummy...
Disadvantages: There are only 12 per packet. this is not enough. There should be more!!!!!!
There are things in life which puzzle me, which intrigue and amaze me. One of these things is how on earth someone managed to think up the idea of a jaffa cake in the first place, and another is how they make them work.
What I mean by that is this. The Humble Jaffa Cake is a sponge base, like a little round fluffy cake, waiting to be gobbled up. A small circle of orange jelly and a chocolate coating. Now the cake, presumable gets cooked first, and the jelly laid on top after, because otherwise the heat of the cooking would melt the jelly. But how does the ehat of the melted chocolate not melt the jelly? This, for me, is the great unanswered question regarding The Humble Jaffa Cake.
If you have any ideas on how it works - if you work for McVities and want to get back to me, give me a guided tour (with free samples?) of your Jaffa Cake Making Establishment, please feel free to contact me, I will be most interested to have my questions answered!
My most recent food craving (and with only a couple of weeks till B-Day, possibly my last!) has been, as you might have guessed already, for Jaffa Cakes. I have not been terribly bothered about the brand, but have to say that McVities do make the best Jaffa Cake without shadow of a doubt. I feel, having sampled several varieties that I can make that judgement quite easily. There is something about the fluffy lightness of the sponge base, the tangy and zesty orange fullness of the jelly, and the rich, dark chocolate that covers the cake thickly enough to be noticable that really makes them a thing of beauty and perfection.
Anyone reading who is watching their weight need not worry about the consumption of the odd Jaffa Cake, as they only have half a gram of saturated fat per cake, and only 46 tiny teeny calories each. Pretty good going really, and it means you can have a second helping with your cuppa without feeling terribly guilty!
Jaffa Cakes can be bought at any good corner shop or supermarket, and you get 12 per packet. Himself paid a small and respectable 79p for a box from our corner shop yesterday (RRP is 99p acording to the box) on a special offer. Needless to say, this box is now empty and I'm hoping he comes in with another packet tonight so I can sit and munch away while watching Supernanny and making mental child-raising notes for future reference!
If you are a Jaffaholic, there are other varieties to try, like Blackberry and Apple as well as Lemon and Lime. I' not sure I'm convinced, but having not tried either, I can't really say. I have to admit, I'm more inclined to stick to my zesty orange Jaffa's but you never know!
Enjoy your afternoon cuppa, get those Jaffas out!
Thank you for reading, Kate x
