Advantages: Low in calories and fat, delicious.
Disadvantages: None
I'm not going to bore you all with the debate over whether Mc Vitie's Jaffa Cakes are actually cakes or whether they are in fact biscuits....whatever they are, which I believe is somewhere in between the two, they are rather nice.
You can purchase a box of 12 Jaffa Cakes for about 70p, but I got some on a buy one get one free offer at the Co-Op yesterday. Both packets were gone by midnight last night! They are packaged in a blue cardboard box and the biscuits inside are packaged in a nice orange cellophane wrapper. The packaging is simple yet effective. Jaffa cakes are quite delicate, so they need the cardboard outer packaging to protect them.
A jaffa cake consists of a sponge base with a tangy orange jelly on top covered in a thin layer of dark chocolate. They are round and about 5cm in diameter with a domed bottom. The sponge is very firm in texture, as is the orange jelly. The chocolate cracks easily when you eat the jaffa cake because it is very thin.
I think Jaffa Cakes are so popular because the flavours and textures work so well together. The sponge melts in your mouth while the dark chocolate and orange flavours really compliment each other. They are very moorish! With biscuits I always feel like I need a cup of tea with them, with Jaffa cakes I am perfectly happy to eat them minus the cup of tea.
One of the great things about Jaffa Cakes is that they are low in fat. One cake will provide you with a tiny 46 calories and just 0.5 grams of saturated fat (0.5 weight watchers points!) So you wont feel too terrible when you cant resist scoffing the whole pack. They are suitable for vegetarians, but do contain milk, eggs, soya and gluten.
I have seen and tried variations on the Jaffa Cake there, such as Jaffa Cake bars, mini Jaffa Cakes and Blackcurrant Jaffa Cakes. In my opinion these things are all fine, but I don't think anything beats the original.
Summary: Don't accept any imitations.......

Morrison' s do a passable copycat version too. But you can't beat the real deal. |

- 28/06/09 Love Jaffa cakes. I really don't like the bars though. All the copycat budget versions are usually too sweet too. |
