Advantages: Multitude of flavours and textures, very tasty

Disadvantages: chocolate easily melts

Being a keen footballer, it was always said the professionals used to eat oranges at half time. Not the case any more, the secret is they eat Jaffa cakes!! Why? Because they are a good source of energy but low in fat.

What is a Jaffa cake?

A Jaffa cake is a small round cake approximately 54mm in diameter and is built up of three layers. The base is a sponge cake base, the second layer consists of an orange flavoured jelly and the top layer is a thin covering of dark chocolate.

Bite into the Jaffa cake and your taste buds are greeted with a good mixture of flavours and textures. If eating chocolate side up (the right way up??), the light sponge first hits your taste buds. The sponge is fluffy, light and tastes sweet. Next the tangy flavour of orange kisses your buds, the jelly like texture quickly smears over your tongue. Finally the thin layer of dark chocolate hits your flavour receptors, satisfying the craving for the chocoholics amongst us. The mixture of flavours and tastes is enough to satisfy the sweetest of teeth people out there.

Packaging and cost:

McVities Jaffa cakes come in a blue box with the familiar orange lettering, 'Jaffa Cakes' with the McVities name just above in the same orange colour. The box, is a square tube which is just big enough to host a stack of Jaffa cakes (approximately 12 in a stack or 150g worth). Open the box to find a stack of Jaffa cakes encased in a clear plastic type packet which keeps the cakes fresh and soft.

For a box of 150g they cost approximately 50p, Asda current sell them at 48p / box. They can also be bought in a double box containing double the amount, i.e. two stacks of 150g worth.

Varieties of Jaffa Cakes:

Over the years McVities have introduced a variety of the original Jaffa Cake, these include:

Limited flavour Jaffa cakes:

Lemon and Lime
Apple and Blackberry
Strawberry
Cranberry and Orange
Blackcurrant

Alternative Jaffa Cakes:

Jaffa cake bars, rectangular cakes
Jaffa mini rolls
Jaffa cake muffins.

Verdict:

Jaffa cakes are a excellent source for a sugar rush without being piled with calories. They provide a nice spongy cake base, lovely fruity orange flavour and smearing of chocolate to cover off a variety of sweet flavours to satisfy most people. Overall, an excellent alternative to fattening biscuits and are relatively cheap. Only disadvantage is if they linger too long in your hand the chocolate melts quickly and with ease. Normally I tend to house chocolate products in the fridge, especially in this weather (It's sunny for once here) but this tends to dry out the cake part, this ruins the Jaffa cakes as they are meant to be lovely and spongy, well in my eyes anyway.

Summary: Excellent source of low fat energy
