Advantages: great pastry, easy to use, perfect results
Disadvantages: none - except all pastry has so many calories
Just say 'puff pastry' to me & it brings back horrible memories of having to make it in my 'A' level Home Economics classes at school. Don't get me wrong, I DO love to cook, but making puff pastry is such a long process with all the chilling, folding & rolling etc.
Thank goodness Jus-Rol do it ready-made as it saves so much time! I have found this quite hard to find sometimes but luckily our local Iceland now sell it so I can make sure I always have some in the freezer.
The packaging is just plastic which is sufficient to hold the 2 blocks, they cost just £2 & the blocks weigh 500g each.
I like the way there are 2 separate blocks as you can use 1 & save 1 & for some reason they don't stick together - this way it's economical to use & there's no waste.
All the ingredients, nutritional values, cooking directions, preparation plus hints & tips are listed on the pack & are easy to read.
The pastry has to defrost first & then you can use it for loads of different things both sweet & savoury. I've used Jus-Rol for pies, sausage rolls, vol-au-vents, tarts & the odd strudel.
It's really easy to roll so you can use whatever thickness the dish requires - eg some people like a thick pastry on their sausage rolls whilst others prefer the sausage part to be their main taste. Obviously all pastry is high in calories but puff pastry even more so as there is more fat content - so thinner pastry saves a few calories?!
When rolled it's also easy to handle & doesn't come apart when you lift it.
My younger daughter (17) is still quite a fussy eater but loves my cheese & onion pies - her friends are also quite impressed that I make 'home-made' pies.
I just use 1 slab, let it defost, roll out thinly on a floured board, cut out circles using a pastry cutter (or cup) & add the filling which is just grated cheese, chopped onion plus a beaten egg or use a little milk. I seal round the edges with milk/egg, add the cheese & onion, put another circle on top, crimp the edges & brush with milk. I slab will make around 12 cheese & onion pies - very cheap compared to buying them!
I've also done the same only using cooked chicken & fresh mushrooms which have been heated up with a little condensed mushroom soup - these are nice as pies or you can use the same mixture for vol-au-vents.
I really like this product & would recommend it to anyone who enjoys puff pastry but doesn't have time to make it from scratch.
