Advantages: A quick and easy way to a good puff pastry

Disadvantages: High in fats

I think that most of us would agree that it is fairly easy to whip up a bit of shortcrust pastry but there is no way that you can improvise and turn out a half decent puff pastry without having time to spare. Of course rough puff pastry is a short cut but even that takes time.
My pastry can be a bit hit and miss, some days it melts in your mouth and other days you could sole boots with it!
On the whole the Other Half tends to gracefully accept what is put in front of him and make the most of it, but he does prefer puff pastry to shortcrust.
We house-people ( please note no sexism!) have to be crafty and if that means telling a little porky now and again that is something that I can live with. So, when the meat goes into the casserole dish and that home made Jus-Rol puff pastry covers the top if the Other half dishes out any compliments re the puffy pastry I accept them gracefully!

Of course we are ruined nowadays, we have the world at our feet, every convenience food that you can think of is available in the supermarkets. But back in the 1930's life was a very different story, convenience foods were few and far between. A Northumbrian chap called Tom Forsyth was busy running his own bakery, the business survived the depression and the war and then heading into the 1950's Tom decided to start selling his uncooked pastry in his bakery. The idea took off like a rocket and when he asked the customers what they did with his pastry they replied- " We just roll it out"- hence the name Just Roll was born, but later on the name was shortened to Jus-Rol to make life easier. Jus-Rol have always used the same colour coding for their pastry, red for puff pastry and blue for shortcrust pastry.

I more often than not buy the Jus-Rol puff pastry sheets. There are two good sized sheets of frozen puff pastry in each box and it costs £1.68p a box.
You can remove one sheet from the box and then keep the other sheet frozen
for the next time. The sheet of frozen puff pastry has a plastic film around it which needs to be removed and then the pastry needs to be thawed at room temperature for about an hour and a half.
You can defrost it in the microwave but I have a habit of overdoing it!
Once the ready rolled sheet has thawed it can be used as you want, maybe to top a pie, to make sausage rolls, Eccles cakes, puff pastry mince pies are scrummy and it makes a good strudel for dessert.
If you are using it to top a savoury base then you can brush the puff pastry with beaten egg before cooking and the crust turns golden in the oven.

Jus-Rol pastry is approved by the vegetarian society, it has no artificial colours, flavours or preservative but it does contain wheat. Once you defrost a sheet of pastry then you must use it all, there is no sticking the left overs back into the freezer!
A 210g sheet contains a very hefty 800 calories and unsurprisingly it is stinkingly high in fats.

You can buy the Jus-Rol pastry in a block and they do a delicious Filo pastry and a rich butter shortcrust pastry too.
If you work out how labour intensive puff pastry making is then it does make sense to buy the ready made.
Although the puff pastry is rich in fats which is a bit of a drawback it certainly cooks up a treat, when the pastry goes into the hot oven and starts to cook it forms lots of rich crispy flaky layers.
It is equally as tasty as any puff pastry that I have ever made myself and is far more convenient.
There may be some who would rather not indulge in this rich pastry because of the high fat levels but as long as we are sensible and have it in moderation then I am sure it is fine.

Summary: A great way to get unbeatable puff pastry
