Advantages: no flour all over the kitchen
Disadvantages: you need to bring to room termperature prior to using
I would consider myself a reasonable cook. I like to try new things and experiment, but, the thought of making my own puff pastry always sends me skipping to the next in the cook book.
I decided I really wanted to make a chicken and mushroom pie, but really didn't want to risk making the pastry myself and ruining the whole dish. My friend suggested I try JusRol Puff pastry, which you can buy frozen from most super markets.
I purchased mine from Tesco and left it in the fridge to defrost until I needed it the following evening. The pastry cost about £1.50. I initally thought that this was quite expensive but when you work out how much time it saves you then I think it's worth it.
I made my pie filling and then had to cook the base blind. I unwrapped the pastry, which comes in circular sheets x2 in the pack that I had purchased, and found that it was a bit crumbly! I continued and 'patched up' the gaps that appeared and backed the pastry blind. It went a lovely golden colour and was certainly not soggy! I filled the base with my filling and topped up with the second circle of pastry from the pack. I think because I had left this out in the warm kitchen for half an hour, it was much easier to use and didn't crack at all. If you do use this pastry, I would highly recommend bringing it to room temperature before you need to use it.
I brushed the pie crust with milk and returned it to the oven. I was really pleased when the timer went off 35 mins later and I opened the door. Inside was a lovely, golden brown pie, that any farmers wife would be proud to produce.
Summary: A great time saving, fail safe way of making a delicous pie
