I love to make soup especially at this time of year and always use Kallo organic stock cubes as I think they are simply the best around! Kallo organic stock cubes come in several different varieties including vegetable and free range chicken and well as a low salt version. I am going to tell you about the free range chicken cubes.
Kallo started life as a small family run business 20 years ago, producing organic products. Today Kallo are part of the giant Wessanen NV group based in the Netherlands. Kallo also make rice cakes, Whole earth peanut butter and the SO Good Range. I can also recommend Whole Earth peanut butter!
Kallo chicken stock cubes come in a small orange cardboard box. Each pack contains 6 stock cubes. The cubes are individually foiled wrapped to keep them fresh. They have a long shelf life. The reason I buy Kallo as opposed to other cheaper brands, is that they are made from organic ingredients. They are dairy gluten and artificial additive free too. Like many stock cubes, Kallo contains quite a lot of salt but at least Kallo use sea salt which is better for you.
Each cube is fairly solid and doesn't crumble like an Oxo cube. Each cube will make 500ml of stock. To make up the stock all you need to do is dissolve a cube in boiling water and stir well. I find that it helps to crush the cube against the side of the jug as they can be a bit difficult to dissolve. Unlike some stock cubes I have tried, Kallo cubes have a lovely smell. The chicken version smells strongly of chicken just as it should!
I use stock cubes on a regular basis for all sorts of recipes. When roasting a chicken I like to melt a little butter in a pan and then crush in a stock cube. When the mixture has dissolved I brush it over the chicken before roasting. This gives it a delicious flavour.
As I indicated I make a lot of soup. I always use Kallo stock cubes and have always had delicious results, well nearly always! Leek and potato is my family's favorite at the moment. For this I spray a little fry light into the bottom of a large pan and then fry an onion. Next add a chopped carrot and about 5 leeks. Make sure you wash the leeks well after chopping as they can contain a lot of grit! Finally add a couple of chopped potatoes. Leave to sweat for a few minutes ensuring the mixture doesn't burn. I normally use 2 stock cubes and 1000ml of water to make a large pan of soup. I think the chicken cubes give a really god flavour. Obviously you will need to use vegetable if you are serving this to any vegetarians!
I also like to add a Kallo stock cube to the water when cooking pasta as this gives a good flavour.Rissotto is another favorite and I use the cubes for this too.
Overall I highly recommend Kallo stock cubes, they may cost a bit more but I think they are well worth it! Kallo stock cubes usually retail at around 75p for a box of 6. However at the moment they are on offer in Asda at 2 for just £1 and I will be stocking up!
