Advantages: Tasty; substantial; high in fibre

Disadvantages: Suprising amount of sweeteners for a healthy cereal

I am trying to make it a habit to have breakfast everyday, during the week I usually have toast but at the weekends I prefer cereal in an effort to up my milk intake. Unfortunately I don't like many cereals which makes weekend breakfasts a little dull so I am trying new cereals. Bran Flakes are considered to be a healthy breakfast high in fibre, which is also lacking from my diet, my almost equally fussy sister likes them and they're recommended by Chris Hoy - taking all this into account and the bonus that a 500g box was on offer for £1 I thought I'd give them a go. I'm glad I did as I've already happily eaten through a box full. The flakes are light brown in colour, fairly thick (compared to kelloggs cornflakes) and the flakes vary in size from the size of a 1p piece to a 2p piece. As I do with most cereals I do snack on them from the box, and surprisingly they taste slightly sweet - definitely a suitable and satisfying dry cereal snack. I always have my bran flakes with sultanas or banana, doing away with the need for sugar (an unhealthy habit from my child hood), and I pour on a large amount of milk almost covering all the flakes. With the milk on the flakes taste less noticeably sweet but still very nice. They don't seem to go soggy much (another bit of my fussiness is I don't like soggy cereal) however I don't linger long over a bowl of cereal so I'm not sure how representative a test this is. The advertising gives the impression that these are a healthy cereal, according to the box they contain 18% of your daily fibre needs, are wholegrain, and are fortified with 6 B group vitamins and iron. On a less positive note in addition to the wholewheat, wheatbran barley malt flavouring and vitamins there is added sugar, salt and honey which'll explain the slightly sweet taste. Though I think the sweeteners are needed else these would be a very bland breakfast. As I said earlier I do enjoy bran flakes and will definitely be buying more boxes.

Summary: Not as bland as they may sound

The Bran Flakes do go soggy if you leave them soaking in milk for more than about 10 minutes, I quite like them soggy myself though!

Pricey at full price, our kids haven't yet noticed that we've switched to Tesco own.

Useful review
