Advantages: Taste good, Low in fat, Low price
Disadvantages: Maybe just a bit boring!
It had been years since I had eaten Kellogg's Cornflakes, as I usually prefer Alpen or Fruit and Fibre these days, but there was a special offer to get a free Simpson's watch - you just knew there'd be an offer involved didn't you? This time it wasn't an offer for me, but my Goddaughter is a great Simpson's fan and since we have moved to Llandudno I like to send her little surprises in the post when I can. So it was that I bought a large box of Frosties (a bit sweet for me but Dave likes them) and an equally large box of Cornflakes. Kellogg's Cornflakes have been around since Adam was a lad as my dad would say and the box is still as recognisable today as ever. In fact I don't think it has changed appreciably since Henry Kellogg first made them in 1906! So there you are then, you've found your box with the Kellogg's logo, the picture of the crowing cock and the sunshine on the front. Incidentally the boxes come in various sizes - 250g, 750g and 1kg - currently priced in Tesco's at 99p, £1.64 and £2.04 respectively. What's inside then? On opening the box you will find that the Cornflakes are contained in a sealed greaseproof bag to keep them fresh. The idea is that you open this bag and it's full of sunshine! Well, maybe that IS a bit of an exaggeration, but they certainly do taste good! The Cornflakes themselves are golden flakes, a bit wrinkly round the edges, but then aren't we all? I eat mine with skimmed or semi skimmed milk and no sugar and, provided I don't forget and leave them in the milk too long, they are crunchy in texture and nice if unexciting in flavour. If you leave them in the milk for too long they go soggy and it does ruin the effect. Although they are a breakfast cereal, and still one of the most popular in the country, eating them doesn't have to just be a breakfast ritual. I often eat them as a low fat, high ene
rgy snack during the day or just before bed to keep the night hunger at bay! So what exactly are they then? Well Kellogg's Cornflakes are toasted flakes of corn enriched with vitamins and minerals such as iron, folic acid and several of the B vitamins. Sadly they also contain 1g of salt and 8g of sugar per 100g of flakes. They also have 370 calories per 100g too, but you would probably eat a serving of about 30g at a time if you were watching your weight. They contain very little fat and being mainly carbohydrate they give energy on a slow release basis so you don't get hungry again for a while. So there you are then, almost 100 years old and still delicious! The Cornflakes I mean - not me!
