Advantages: Tasty, satisfying, widely available
Disadvantages: Can't stop at just one!
Having previously reviewed the Nutri-Grain Oat Baked Bars and being rather impressed, I was pleased to recently pick up a box of Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Elevenses Ginger Bakes on offer for half price in Tesco at just £1.14. Bargain! They are marketed as a snack cake, something to have at 'elevenses' and the box states 'tasty bakes for lovers of cakes'. As a lover of cakes how could I resist?
Packaging
*********
The bars are described as 'wheat and oatmeal bakes with ginger' and are individually foil wrapped within an outer box. There are six 45g bars in a box, making it feel like quite a hefty purchase. There's an awful lot of writing on the box with all the information about the product you need (and much that you don't) such as an ingredient list, allergy info, nutritional info, advertising for other products, and Nutri-Grain facts. A picture shows a very accurate representation of a couple of the bars alongside a cup of tea.

Look and Taste
*************
On opening the foil wrapper immediately the smell of ginger cakes wafts out. The cake is a dark rich brown colour with a scattering of oats on top and measures about 7cm by 5cm. The texture is soft and moist, quite stodgy, not too sticky to touch but it does stick in your teeth. I had hoped these would taste like McVities classic Jamaica Ginger cake and they do, but with the addition of oats on the top, which to be honest I could have done without. They have a nice spicy taste, not too sweet nor too overpoweringly gingery but they do leave a bit of a spicy ginger after taste.
Verdict
******
I have to be honest it was the price which attracted me to these ginger bakes. At £1.14 for a box of 6 on a half price offer in Tesco, they equate to just 19p each, which is great. I'm not sure I'd buy them very often at full price though and will be looking out for future offers in the supermarkets. They are delicious and make for a very tasty treat and are actually quite filling, especially when like me, you can't stop at just one... Not particularly healthy, but probably not the worst thing you could buy as a snack. If you like ginger cake you'll love these.
Summary: Have them for elevenses, twelveses or just about anytimeses!
