Advantages: The taste, the texture, the overall yumminess!

Disadvantages: The sugar and the additives

I shall be working on our stall on Llandudno seafront on Sunday selling lifeboat souvenirs and as the stall is open from 8am until 6pm I needed some food and drink to take with me that wouldn't ruin my diet which is still going well.

I was in town today emptying some of our lifeboat collecting boxes and I popped into Londis to see if I could get some good ideas. They had a display of individual oat and grain bars so I chose five different ones and although they weren't all low calorie versions I decided that they would be better than chocolate bars!

The one I really liked the look of was the Kellogg's Nutri Grain Oat Baked Bar Totally Oaty and I have to admit that I couldn't resist trying it. Apparently these bars also come in cherry and chocolate flavours, but I don't think I would fancy either of those as much.

The price

It cost me 65p as an individual bar although a pack of six bars would cost £2.26 in Tesco's at the moment so that would work out at about 38p each. Having said that it tasted so delicious that a box of six would present far too much temptation - I would want to eat more than one at a time!

The wrapping

The bar is sealed in a foil back wrapper which is all in shades of gold making it look really tasty and appealing. The only information on the wrapper is the name of the bar, the weight (50g), the address of Kellogg's and the fact that it is a 'Baked Oat Bar with Golden Syrup'. Obviously if you buy a pack of six bars all the nutritional information and the list of ingredients would appear on the box.

The bar

I opened the wrapper to find a lovely moist bar containing lots of oats and by the golden colour of the bar a fair amount of golden syrup too! It smelled very appetizing too. Oh dear not good for the diet then.

The taste

The bar tasted gorgeous! It was moist and chewy and quite sweet without being sickly. I broke pieces off the bar and put them into my mouth and a few bits did fall off but on the whole it held its shape whilst I ate it. The moistness of the bar made it feel almost cakey in texture, whilst still remaining very chewy and satisfying. I was quite hungry when I ate the bar and it did make me feel satisfied for a couple of hours after eating it.

Nutritional Information per 50g bar

Calories 204
Protein 2.5g
Carbohydrates 32g
Of which sugars 16g
Fat 8g
Of which saturates 1g
Fibre 1.5g
Salt 0.2g

Conclusion

Having looked at the nutritional information I can see that this isn't something that I would have on a regular basis partly because of the calories and sugar and also because I tend to eat very little in the way of processed foods these days.

Now I have said that I will add that as an occasional treat these are delicious! I wouldn't buy a box of them though as I know I couldn't trust myself to just eat one at a time as they are so nice.

Summary: I wouldn't dare buy a boxful
