Advantages: delicious sweet treat

Disadvantages: unhealthy, not a good breakfast

Pop Tarts have been around for years, I remember sulking when I was not allowed to have them for breakfast when I was a kid so I think picking up a packet was an act of belated teenage rebellion, either that or I had a new toaster to try out and I wanted to play with my new toy!

I paid £1.99 for a 400g pack from Asda which contained 8 pop tarts which were foil wrapped into four packages of two pop tarts to keep them fresh. I chose the strawberry sensation flavour and there are also chocolate flavour ones.

These are easy to prepare, just pop them into the toaster on its lowest heat setting and when it pops up you have a delicious snack to eat. I prefer to toast them twice, that way they go slightly burnt round the edges and taste even better.

The pop tart itself comprises of strawberry fruit filling in a frosted pastry. They are delicious; the pastry is like a thin biscuit and is lovely and crumbly when it is warm. The filling is like a delicious hot jam, very syrupy and sweet and the thin layer of icing has little sprinkles on it which are delicious warm.

These tastes all combine very well to give a lovely sweet, gooey sensation. The fact that they are hot makes them nicer than most biscuits. You need to take care when eating them, the sugary filling gets extremely hot and if you take a massive bite then you will be likely to get a burnt tongue.

These are marketed as a breakfast food but I can't imagine anyone starting the day on them. They have a massive 198 calories per tart and contain 13% of your GDA of saturated fat. One tart is hardly filling so you would probably need two for breakfast doubling the damage you are doing to your body. Sugary foods tend to lead to a spike in blood sugar making you hungry again a couple of hours later so you would probably end up reaching for a snack mid morning.

I love these as a snack or a pudding after dinner, still unhealthy but ok for a treat. The kids loved them too and thought it was very mean they were not allowed them for breakfast.

Summary: A nice sweet treat but not for breakfast

I've never had the nerve to try these for some peculiar reason, but I think I will now.
