I remember the old style pop tarts which simply consisted of pastry with jam in the middle, in my house we enjoyed these a lot and were very disappointed when they stopped making them and introduced ones only covered in icing. This review is for Strawberry Sensation flavour only. We buy our pop tarts from Tesco where they retail at £2.18 for a box of 8 (400g). The packaging is slightly different than that in the picture, they are in an orange cardboard box with yellow circles on and have a large white pop tart logo with a picture depicting the product. Inside, there are 4 individually wrapped foil portions, each with 2 pop tarts inside. They can be found in the cereal aisle, usually with the cereal bars.

Each pop tart is around 3-4 inches wide and about 5 inches tall. They are flat pastries which are less than a cm thick. The icing covers the front of the product but a small border of pastry can be seen around the edges. The icing on this particular flavour is white with orange and pink hundreds and thousands on top.

To cook pop tarts, you simply pop them in the toaster, I find I usually leave mine in there for around a minute until the pastry is suitably soft but depending on how well done you like yours confirms the cooking time. I find that if I leave mine in for too long the edges quickly turn black which ruins the taste for me. I absolutely love the taste of pop tarts and have never found anything remotely similar. The pastry I find to be soft and smooth and tastes very creamy. The icing is not too sweet and does actually complement the product well, the hundreds and thousands add a hint of strawberry flavouring and add texture. The jam inside is more like a jelly or paste as it has a completely different texture to jam, it is more similar to that that you would find in biscuits. However, this jam has a good strawberry flavour and complements the pastry well.

Unfortunately these pop tarts are not very good for you so we only have them as a treat, each tart contains 198 calories, 16g sugar and 5g fat (1g which saturates), they also contain 2.5g of salt which is 42% of the recommended daily allowance!

We really enjoy these in our house and although they are quite expensive we find they are good as a treat. However, we find they are not as filling as toast and cereal and we often top up our breakfast with something else. I would recommend these to anyone with a sweet tooth or as an occasional treat for children as they are a fun breakfast or snack!

Would be 5 stars for taste but dropping a star due to nutritional value and price.

Summary: Good occasional snack
