Advantages: So tasty!
Disadvantages: Not too filling
I'm not one for eating breakfast much I must confess. I always prefer to spend the extra 10 minutes in my warm bed rather than get up and make something to eat. The other day however, I had done this but was off to a meeting which would last all morning. As I neared my destination, I could feel that I would definitely need some kind of sustenance otherwise my stomach would growl and rumble and embarrass me in front of the North East's Finest Academic Minds.
I quickly pulled into a small old fashioned sort of a petrol station in a one horse backwater of Co. Durham in search of nourishment; it being the morning I was thinking along the lines of a Nutri-Grain bar or something similarly cerealy (try saying that with your mouth full!) This being a small old fashioned sort of a petrol station in a one horse backwater of Co. Durham however, there was not much choice. I didn't exactly relish the thought of a Mars Bar at 8.30, so I went for the Rice Krispies Square option. I had seen these in the shops previously, but had never really fancied trying them because I thought they'd be dry and crispy and not very filling. I handed over my 52p and squirreled my breakfast off to the car.
The 'Square' itself weighs 28g and is about the size of a deck of playing cards. When you open the packet the feast before your eyes looks rather like some Rice Krispies all clumped together with a sticky white goo. Not the most appetising-looking thing I've ever see in my life. The sweet smell of the marshmallows soon hit my nostrils though and, I'm not ashamed to say, made my mouth water. I dug in.
The Squares are not actually as sticky as they look, and you can tear bits off quite easily without getting your fingers all gooed up. Nor are they as crunchy as I'd first assumed, so you can bite into them without fear of breaking your teeth. And they taste gorgeous! Mallowy and sweet, crispy yet not too dry, and chewy but won't rip your fillings out. Perfect! I feel I must point out at the juncture though, that I have a very sweet tooth so I doubt if everyone will feels the same about them as me!
At 118 calories per 28g, these are not the healthiest of snacks, nor are they the most filling. I could tell even while I was eating it that it was never going to stave off the hunger pangs until the sandwiches arrived - it was just too light and airy. I hastily filled up on coffee and custard creams! So while I thought these were tasty, they were not that substantial at all and I think you'd be able to find a more filling 118 calories elsewhere. 52p is probably what's considered a good price for a chocolate bar or similar snack these days, but it still seemed a little expensive to me for what you actually get. They are available in packs of four from supermarkets for about £1.45 if you like them enough!
Other varieties of the Rice Krispies Square include: Chocolate and Caramel, Crazy Choc and Totally Chocolatey (not sure what the difference is between these last two, you'll have to try them yourself!)
