Advantages: Offers something different, sweet & light. Crisp rice cereal & chewy marshmallow
Disadvantages: Not overly keen on the sweet & sticky marshmallow
I tried one of these this week after using a coupon in a newspaper to get a single one free. I can't say that I've eaten Rice Krispies much, if at all, and wasn't totally sure what to expect with this bar.
Rice Krispies are made by Kellog's, a leading brand when it comes to cereal. Since their debut on supermarket shelves in 1928, Krispies have become quite a popular choice, especially amongst the younger consumers. I think they've become very recognisable in part due to the advertising ('snap, crackle & pop'!) and the product line has more recently been extended with the introduction of these Squares.
Although sometimes difficult to come across, these are sold in individual 28g packets at between 45-65p each. The multipacks are easily to find, with a pack of 4 x 28g individually wrapped squares costing around £1.50. Price-wise, I think these are rather expensive given what they are, and I wouldn't buy them at £1.50 for 4. I have, however, seen some offers on these and have come across them in cheaper discount stores (such as Poundland) for £1, which is a far better buy.
Each square weighs 28g and is packaged in a shiny blue wrapper for freshness, making them good for taking them out with you, lunchboxes etc. When picking one up the first thing I noticed, other than the shiny shiny wrapper, was how lightweight these are, adding to my belief that Somerfield charging 65p for one is definitely overpriced.
With 118 calories and 3.5g fat per square, these are probably slightly higher in fat/cals than you may expect given they are so light and made of cereal. It must be the marshmallow to provides the extra calories, but they nonetheless fit the criteria for a handy little snack.
What are they? Well, I wasn't quite sure at first, but the sound of marshmallow did put me off slightly. These are described as "light crispy grains of toasted rice krispies covered in chewy marshmallow". So they're basically the toasted rice cereal pieces you get in the regular Rice Krispies cereal boxes, but packed into a chunky square and held together by marshmallow.
When you take it out of the wrapper you'll notice it's quite a reasonably-sized sized square. Although the Krispies are packed together, there are some gaps as they're not too dense and neither do you have clumps of marshmallow.
The Krispies, aka the toasted rice cereal, is light yet slightly crunchy. It's the melted marshmallow that glues the square together which gives these a chewy texture. Although they're quite chunky squares, they settle quite lightly in your stomach so they probably wont go far in filling you up; good for a snack but not the best if you have hunger pangs you want to satisfy.
These have a very sweet smell, which you can smell from the moment you open them to after you've finished eating them. They can also get a bit messy and the marshmallow leaves fingers sticky.
Overall, I wont be rushing out to buy these but would consider them infrequently if they're on offer. They have a nice taste and are different to the average biscuit or chocolate snack, but I found them to be perhaps a little too sweet as I found the marshmallow slightly sickly. That may just be me not liking marshmallow too much, so I would suggest giving them a try to make up your own mind.
These are also available in Chocolatey and Chocolate & Caramel flavours, which I must admit, I find more tempting than the melted marshmallow.
Summary: A unique snack that's lighter than it looks!
