Advantages: Taste great, excellent for kids and adults

Disadvantages: Go soggy very quickly when eat with milk, price

Over the last few weeks I have developed a bit of a "thing" for cereal. When I first found out that I was pregnant I consciously tried to make an effort to have cereal for breakfast as previously I would have grabbed an apple or had a few pieces of pineapple about 3 hours after getting up on a morning. Rice Krispies were my first choice, since being a child I have loved this cereal. However cereal is now not limited to just breakfast, I eat it at any time of the day, sometimes with milk (skimmed) other times dry..........

***What are they***

The packaging of Rice Krispies states that they are "puffed grains of rice with added vitamins and minerals.

***Packaging***

Rice Krispies are made by Kellogs and the box is emblazoned with the Kelllogs branding. The boxes come in either 450g or 600g. The box is bright blue and has the SNAP , CRACKLE and POP characters on the front of the bowl with the image of a bowl of Rice Krispies with milk.

***Price***

A 450g box of Rice Krispies costs £2.30 in Asda, which are sometimes on special offer for £2 for a box. A larger 600g box costs around £3.00. As these are Kellogs products you pay a price premium for the product. All of the supermarkets offer their own brand variety of Rice Krispies which are a lot cheaper and taste very similar. In Asda you can purchase a 450g bag of Smartprice Rice Krispies for 79p, and their own Asda brand 450g box of Rice Crispies for £1.30. Therefore if you are counting the pennies you probably wouldn't opt for these Kellogs Rice Krispies.

***Rice Krispies***

Rice Krispies in my opinion do not really have a distinct scent to them, when you pur them into the bowl they have a grainy scent which is slightly sweet.

As soon as you pour milk over the cereal a noise erupts. Like the marketing campaigns say Rice Krispies really do make a snap, crackle and pop sound.

The taste of the cereal is very pleasant. It is quite difficult to describe but as you chew the small pieces of puffed rice they have a baked/ toasted taste to them which has a sweet after taste to them but still tastes almost of wheat, very much like bread that has a sweeter taste to it. This is a very light taste.

As you chew there is a very subtly sweet taste to the cereal, which I feel when eat with milk (even skimmed) is emphasised. As you chew the texture is very crunchy.

The cereal stays crunchy and is pleasant for around 10 minutes once you have poured the milk over the cereal. Any longer the cereal starts to go quite soggy and I find this really unpleasant to eat. Therefore my advice would be to eat them up quite quick!!

***Nutritional Information***

A 30g serving of Rice Krispies contains:

114 calories
0.4g fat

I eat these with skimmed milk (or sometimes even dry) which is lower in calories but this sized portion eaten with semi skmmed milk contains 175 calories and 3g fat. Even with semi skimmed milk the calorie and fat content is still low especially as you can eat these are a light meal or a snack. It's a lot more healthy than reaching for a Mars Bar and I feel a lot more filling.

***Overall***

A great cereal which can be eaten at anytime of the day. The cereal is sweet but not overly sweet and sugary. The only issue I have with Kellogs Rice Krispies is the price..........

Summary: Noisy Puffed rice
