Advantages: healthy, tasty, filling

Disadvantages: none!

They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and I couldn't agree more. When I have had a good breakfast, I find that I have more energy and can concentrate much better at work which is why I very rarely skip this meal. Part of my breakfast routine for many years has been a bowl of Kelloggs Special K and although there have been times when I have been tempted by other cereals I always come back to Special K which I think is now established as my firm favourite.

I expect most people are aware of what Special K looks like but if you don't know they are little flakes which look fairly similar to corn flakes but not as golden. The flakes are made from a combination of rice and wheat and I think they are quite delicious. I would describe it as a bit of a malty taste and I definitely don't think that you need to add anything other than milk.

When you pour the flakes into your bowl they are very crunchy but obviously soften up a bit when you add milk. I think that there is an optimum time in which to eat them though before they become too soggy. However, if you time it just right, after adding milk you get a lovely crunchy chewy texture.

Special K is always marketed as a very healthy type of cereal and also a grown up one. This is why I find it quite surprising that it is the cereal that my four and three year old daughters choose the most. They absolutely love it and what surprises me even more is tht they prefer to just eat the flakes without milk which seems a bit dry to me!

Looking at the healthy aspect of special K, it is recommended that you have a 30 gram serving which contains 112 calories (6% of an adults guideline daily amount), 0.5 grams fat (less than 1% GDA) and 5 grams sugar (6% GDA). These are obviously before you add milk, but they do seem very good, and even with adding 125 mls of semi skimmed milk there are only about 170 calories.

The other good thing about Special K is that I find it very filling and it certainly can keep me going most of the morning with just a piece of fruit for a mid morning snack. It also is high in protein and fibre, both of which are very necessary in the diet.

You often see adverts on television for Special K and it always seems to be telling you that it is good as part of a calorie controlled diet. I definitely agree with this and whenever I am dieting my Special K for breakfast is always a rigorous part of my diet. Obviously that alone is not going to make you lose weight, but certainly for me it's an important part of my diet. Special K does also promote its Slimmer Jeans Challenge which is a two week diet in which for two meals a day you eat Special K combined with third fully balanced meal. I have never tried this, and I think it's aimed at people of a certain size, but it is claimed that this will help you drop a jeans size! As much as I love Special K though, I can't imagine wanting it for two meals a day for two weeks. As they say - you can have too much of a good thing! Anyway if you want to find out more about this or anything else about Special K you can visit the website at

www.kelloggs.co.uk/specialk

A 500 gram box of Special K in Sainsburys costs £2.69 although quite often there are special offers. There are also different Special K varieties such as with red berries or pears and apricots, but these all tend to be more expensive and to my mind, not as good as the original.

So overall there is a lot to recommend Kelloggs Special K - it tastes delicious, fills you up and is very good for you! What more could you want?

Summary: A great way to start the day!
