Advantages: Tasty nutritious cereal
Disadvantages: Wrongly promoted as a Diet cereal
This has been my regular breakfast cereal recently, taking over top spot from Kellogg's Fruit and Fibre. I decided to change as I was getting a bit fed up having currents with my breakfast everyday.
Kellogg's Special K is promoted as "deliciously crunchy multi-grain flakes made with rice and wheat". It's a ready to eat cereal that requires no cooking, you just add milk. It is a tasty breakfast cereal and I certainly prefer it to boring cornflakes. It contains less than 3 % fat and is high in added nutrients such as 6 essential B vitamins, vitamin C, D, and iron. As far as my research goes (reading the side of the packets), it contains more iron per bowl than any other breakfast cereal including Kellogg's Fruit and Fibre which is heavily fortified with vitamins.
Special K has long been promoted as a low fat cereal for those wishing to diet. It is low in saturated fats. However, it does contain a lot of sugar content. For some reason the manufacturers have seen it necessary to nearly double the sugar content during the last 10 to fifteen years. Each small serving now contains 5g of sugar. So Special K can make you fat and should not really be classed as a diet cereal. In fact if I have it every day, I do feel extra flabby after a while.
If you want to get fatter, you can also eat Special K bars, Special K Berries, and Special K Peach and Apricot.
There are a number of different sized boxes, but I won't bore you with the details.
It's not the cheapest of cereals at £2.80 for a 500g box.
Summary: Convient nutritious breakfast cereal
