Advantages: Good brand
Disadvantages: Cheaper, healthier and more interesting options out there
I watched a bit of that programme last week on how much sugar is in cereal, and even though it wasn't a completely rounded viewpoint, I was honestly surprised at how much sugar and salt are in things we assume are healthy, like All-Bran and of course Special K.
Of course, they didn't take into account the milk/protein joined by vereal for breakfast, and I think that Special K and semi-skimmed milk are a quick and convenient way to start the day.
Special K looks like a pale brown version of regular cornflakes, but a bit more 'bumpy' looking. They still have the nice Kellogg's crunch to them, though I personally prefer my cereal to be a bit soggy.
It's available in at least a couple of different sizes; mine is a 35g pack version which is part of a big variety pack. Special K is generlly quite expensive compared to plain cereals, mainly because it's marketed as a 'healthy' specialist cereal in my opinion.
I don't think it is healthy, but it's a good way to get protein into your diet early in the morning, especially for vegetarians and people like me who would only eat carbs if they could!
The cereal is advertised in summer as being part of a slimming challenge - you're supposed to eat two bowls every day for two weeks, plus a third well-balanced meal, and lose weight. I've never tried this, and I don't think I've heard of anyone it's worked for.
The flakes themselves are quite bland tasting, though they crunch well. It's hard to describe the taste really - they just don't taste as sweet as regular cornflakes and seem a bit 'rice'y if that makes sense?! I like to mix things with them like berries or banana to make them a bit more interesting.
I don't find a 35g pack with milk fills me up very long, despite the fact that's the recommended serving, and will pile my bowl higher if I get the chance!
Overall, this cereal is quite boring, which is good for me because it means my housemates will leave it alone! However, there are comparble supermarket brands, such as one by Sainsbury's be good to yourself range, which has fruit added and is cheaper and genuinely healthier. So I opt for this instead if I#m feeling a bit Special K-y.
Summary: It's alright
