You can't deny after eating these Crisps and then going back to Supermarket ones that these are a cut above. They are pretty luxurious, but kind of dangerous if bitten the wrong way!
You get Kettle Chips in many different flavours, but it is the Salt and Pepper ones I am reviewing.
Packaging wise it is just a normal bag of Crisps. The bag size is 150g and you only get this size. I'm sure i've seen 40g bags somewhere a good while ago, but don't think i've seen these for years. Although these are easy enough to open up the top, the packaging is quite thick, and feels a good quality. It is more sturdy that an average bag of Crisps. There isn't a great amount of colour or design on this pack. The pack colour is a faded black colour and the Kettle Chip brand is near the top is off white colourings. It states in large lettering the flavour of the Crisps which are Sea Salt with Crushed Black Peppercorns - so basically Salt and Pepper, but that doesn't sound as fancy.
So now onto the Crisps. These are thick and have plenty of flavouring to them. You can taste the beads of Salt easy enough, and these are dotted with some Black Peppercorn bits as well. The tang of the Pepper with the gainy, course Salt taste make a nice taste sensation.
When you bite into these you get a good crunch. The Crisps are a medium brown colour and a few of them are slightly curled. Although it is easy enough to eat 1 Crisp in 1 go, it is best to crunch these up, as I think you end up tasting the flavour more. I find the flavouring sticks to your fingers as well, so you have to lick it off again.
The only bad thing I can think of is that these can feel slightly greasy, and since I could probably munch through half a bag without thinking, I think after a while if you are eating Crisp after Crisp, then you can get a slight greasy taste in your mouth as well.
Per 100g these Crisps have 484 calories and 28.3g fat, so pretty average for such a snack.
I wouldn't say this is my favourite flavour in the range, but it is close to the top, and a brand of Crisp that I enjoy often.
These normally cost around £1.50 per bag, but can sometimes be on offer for £1.
Ps, the danger I was referring to at the start of the review, is when you eat half of a Crisp and you end up getting a corner bit jabbing into your cheek - sore, or is it just me that has this problem?

- 17/06/09 I am not really a fan of the Kettle brand but will try these as I am struggling to find a decent peppery crisp. |
