Advantages: Delicious and a toy

Disadvantages: pricey

I recently discovered a sweet that has evaded me for some time now. Perhaps it has done so because the last time I purchased one was when my son was small, they were one of his favourites, and mine too at the time as I recall.

Kinder Surprise are especially made for children, being that they contain within their choclately exterior a surprise toy which may be already made up or you may find yourself spending 20 minutes trying to figure out how to build the little whatever. They go through phases whereby there are certain sets to collect, my son endeavoured to collect all the Turtle ones and did so after me spending a fortune trying to do so. The current collection is magnetic animal football players which when collected as a set perform little tricks due to the magnetism of each individual player. Nothing fantastic but quite amazing if you happen to be a 5 year-old.

In general the toys are pretty well made and for those that must be built there is warning of very small pieces. There are instructions enclosed but they are sometimes not explicit enough to complete the complex task of building one of these often quite weird toys. Having said that my nephews love them and find the toys amusing for a while so who am I to disregard their sentiments. Mostly they are some kind of animal, but there are planes and cars and stuff like that.

The egg which is made of milk chocolate is brown on the exterior and white on the interior. It is slightly larger than a normal egg but it's shell is very similar in thickness. This means that there is actually very little chocolate, but what there is is exceptionally nice. It's sweet but not too sweet, and it tastes very creamy. If there is an adult mouthful in the whole egg I'd be really surprised.

The egg encloses another plastic elongated egg shape which in turn houses the toy. They cost in the region of 43p - 50p depending on where you shop. They do keep the kids occupied for a few minutes and they do taste really good but I can think of a lot more better value confections for that kind of money. They can also be purchased in 3 packs for around 120 which does make better value, but they are one I shall be avoiding in the future.

Kinder is a german company and apart from Kinder surprise Eggs they produce a variety of chocolate products. The Kinder Bueno bar is made of the same chocolate as the Surprise but also contains Hazel Nuts in a smooth creamy paste nestled inside the chocolate bar. I personally like the chocolate which is creamy and sweet, but some might consider it too sweet for a chocolate. Kinder also do just a chocolate bar but there is a message on the label identifying that it might contain trace elements of nuts, as do all of the kinder range.

The bars are all priced in the same bracket that being 43p - 55p shopping around will most definately get you a better deal.

Of all the bars i have tried the bueno bar is perhaps the best and is certainly the best in terms of value for money. I shall however as with the Kinder Surprise be buying my usual brand of chocolate in future in the belief that is is both better in taste and value.

Summary: A decent chocolate but over priced by far.

Lovely... All the different products of "Kinder" is something I really miss in England - I've never seen "Kinder Country" for example, which is my favourite :-(
(cereals covered with milk and kinder chocolate). But at least you get Kinder Bueno - yummie....
