Advantages: creamy wafery goodness!
Disadvantages: why don't they make giant happy hippos?!
I first encountered happy hippos when my boyfriend arrived at my house clutching a half-eaten box and saying 'you have GOT to try these!'...
At first glance they are fairly unexciting, the classic orange and white packaging that goes with all Kinder packaging. When removed from the box, you find yourself holding a small cellophane wrapped wafer hippo. And yes it does look quite a lot like a hippo if you can pretend that hippos have not legs and cute grins! The face is a fairly appealing part of the product - very cheery and cute! And there's nothing quite like biting the head off and taking that smug look off its face!
The hippos bottom half is covered in tiny white sort of choclately flakes and I would suggest nibbling just a few of these off and savouring the flavour before moving in for the kill! When you do, take it slow...the hippo is made from a beautifully light crispy wafer that cracks open wonderfully to reveal the centre - a gorgeous mix of creamy milk and hazelnut that's the kind of goopy texture that slides easily round your mouth providing a full on sugar hit!
My boyfriends looking at me saying 'see?' and I'm thinking simultaneously how did he have the willpower to save half the box and bring it round and how can I eat the very last one without him noticing?!
The only downfalls to these hippos is they are extremely addictive and at between 19 and 25 pence each are a bit expensive!
They can also be a bit difficult to track down - although large stores such as woolworths and sainsburys stock them smaller newsagents aren't always guaranteed to have them in.
Overall - another brilliant invention from kinder! :)
Summary: another brilliant invention from kinder!
