Kingsmill Great Everyday White is the bread I buy most often . Costing a pound per 800g loaf from Asda, it is available in medium or thick sliced - I tend to go for the thick slices, as I do like quite chunky sandwiches and toast, and find medium sliced bread just not big enough!
The packaging is plastic, with bright blue and yellow on it and Great Everyday written on it in big white letters . The Kingsmill logo is also clearly visible, and the bread of course comes with a date tag around the sealed end telling you the best before date . I do find the plastic around this loaf a little flimsy . Normally, this wouldn't be a problem - except for the time I let my daughter carry it home from the shop. She was walking a little behind me, and I didn't realise til I got home she'd been dragging the loaf behind her, leaving a trail of shredded plastic and breadcrumbs . I did think of making her do a Hansel and Gretel to follow the trail back and get another loaf, but decided against it!
But yes, the plastic packaging is flimsy , and does tear easily if you get it caught on something. But, it's not really a huge problem!
Each slice of this bread has 102 calories, which isn't too bad . Obviously if you select the medium sliced rather than the thick sliced, the calories will be fewer .
The slices are just the right size for slipping into the toaster, thick but not so thick the toaster struggles to cope. However, I find the slices are tall, so halfway through the toasting I have to turn the slices upside down to make sure the whole thing is toasted, otherwise I end up with an inch of untoasted soft bread at the top . However, I think this is because my toaster is only a little cheapy one, I'm sure more expensive toasters would have no problem.
The bread, when untoasted and taken out of the back has a lovely smell to it - it's almost as though you're smelling it freshly baked and just taken out of the oven . Its soft and springy, with a lovely golden coloured soft crust around the edges. Biting into it, it's light and airy, not stodgy, and fresh tasting . Where in some sandwiches the bread can take over from the fillings just by being so pappy when you chew it, with this bread I can always taste my sandwich filling.
It toasts perfectly, and is crisp and lovely, yet still with just a touch of springiness to it. It doesn't dry out when toasted where some breads do, and is perfectly eatable as dry toast without me feeling I can't swallow it down.
What I really like about this bread is it doesn't dry out - it will last for three or four days quite happily injust it's little plastic bag, and still be just as soft and springy . You can of course freeze it should you need to, as long as you use it within three weeks, and when toasted from frozen it's still lovely .
Its suitable for vegetarians, and for those with allergies it's worth noting that this contains gluten, wheat, and soya .
I really rate this bread - it's the freshest tasting, freshest smelling packaged loaf I've been able to find, and despite it being a little too tall for my toaster, I'm going to keep on using it . At £1 per loaf it's not too expensive either , and with it keeping fresh for so long I don't have to worry about it going stale and getting thrown away .
5 stars!
