Advantages: Cheap, only 106 calories
Disadvantages: I don't like the bitter taste
Chocolate for me is not just something sweet; I believe it is one of the basic food groups and it is always on top of my list when I go shopping. I still remember how I used to enjoy KitKat when I was really young, but truly couldn’t believe that this miraculous thing has been there since 1930’s. However, I have to admit that I have never been one of those who fell in the trap of dark chocolate; it might be healthy but it’s not as good as milk chocolate. When they make it with sweet fruity filling it becomes fine, but still not very satisfactory.
Nestle launched the dark edition of KitKat in the UK in September 2006, and I wish they didn’t. In fact, I’m writing this review because I did a huge mistake when I bought this product a second time although I hated it the first time I bought it. Now writing about it should get it out of my system.
Obviously, what made me buy it a second time is that I forgot about the first, so let me just talk about the second which was just a couple of days ago. I went to the near-by Sainsbury’s as I felt like eating chocolate, as I always do, and found 9 X 2 fingers of dark KitKat for £1.00 as a special offer (normally it’s for £1.25) so it is quite cheap. It has the same red packaging that KitKat normally has, in addition to a picture of the supposedly tempting dark chocolate. This is in addition to the promises with a “new, improved flavour” of a healthy confectionery of which every 2 fingers give you only 106 calories.
To begin with, I have always trusted Nestle and when they mention something about their products I believe them and know that they are too smart to sacrifice their reputation. The positive things about this product have to do with the nutrition. Some of the most important things that you’ll find on the cover include: only 8.5g sugar, 4.1g saturates and 0.1g salt in one chocolate bar. So, in case you were wondering, this is the reason why I gave this product 2/5 rather than 1/5; I know it’s good, but what’s the use? In addition to this, this product is as crispy as the original KitKat (the one with milk chocolate, that is) and I know that this is one of the reasons why most of us buy KitKat. Yes, you can still enjoy breaking it before you eat it; this is how everybody eats KitKat, for some reason, isn’t it?
Moving to the most important factor, namely taste, they say on the cover of this product: “Good to remember: enjoying chocolate as part of a balanced diet is one of life’s little pleasures.” This is, of course, when eating it is actually pleasurable; in this case, it is not. I truly don’t know why this mixture of good ingredients does not work. Perhaps the 65% plain chocolate is too much for it, or maybe dark chocolate does not really go with the usual crispy wafer fingers that seem otherwise miraculous in the original KitKat. I’m not sure of the reason; I think Nestle should sort that out, but what I’m absolutely sure of is that this product is not a success and will remember, this time, never to buy it again. Moreover, maybe the sugar in it is not enough to give you this deceptive feeling of delight that sweet snacks give, so I actually felt depressed after eating it. No, I’m not exaggerating.
So, what’s with the race to bombard us with the benefits of dark chocolate? And what’s with the smug that fills dark chocolate eaters? [Sorry guys.. I just remembered the episode of South Park in which smugness fills the air because of all those who are proud of driving Hybrid cars]. Dark chocolate is an effective antioxidant and it lowers high blood pressure at the same time. Unfortunately, this does not make it delicious.
What I will do from now on is either to choose a kind of dark chocolate that has a sweeter and juicier filling, or to just go for the beloved milk chocolate. As for the calories, many kinds of delicious cereal bars give you a little more than 100 calories. Believe me, after eating this KitKat you’ll simply resume your quest for a real chocolate bar. Finally, I have to say that I tried other kinds of KitKat like peanut butter, white chocolate, orange, and they are much better than this one.
Summary: You call this bitter thing chocolate? It's torture.
