Advantages: tasty snack
Disadvantages: a slight bitter after taste
It's often nice to have something a bit sweet in the cupboard in order to have with a cup of coffee and also to offer to friends, which is why, last time I was in Tesco, I was drawn to a pack of ten Kit-Kat dark biscuits and found myself putting them in my trolley! There were two things that attracted me to them - firstly they are made with dark chocolate, which I love, and secondly, they have a big sign on the front of the packet stating that each biscuit only contains 106 calories which I did not think was at all bad. Actually, there was one more reason - my two daughters are not very keen on dark chocolate so I knew there would be more for me!
Kit-Kat Dark are very similar to the regular type of milk chocolate kit-kat and has the familiar red kit-kat logo, although the main wrapping is brown rather than red. I bought a pack of ten two fingered bars, and each of these are individually wrapped in silver foil, so they all will keep fresh.
I've already mentioned that they are low in calories so could be included as a treat in part of a calorie controlled diet. However, they are quite high in both sugars (8.5 grams), and fat (6.1 grams) so that headline banner about the calories doesn't really tell the whole story! Other useful bits of information on the packaging tell us that these small biscuits are virtually free from everything - hydrogenated fats, nuts and eggs, preservatives, and artificial colours and preservatives! Being free from all of these things obviously makes them quite suitable for vegetarians!
When you unwrap your Kit-Kat dark, you will see two chocolate fingers attached at one side and with quite a generous covering of dark chocolate. Each finger has the small kit-kat logo imprinted in it which is a nice touch, There is also a fairly strong smell of dark chocolate but not too overpowering.
To me, the only way to eat one of these biscuits is to separate the fingers and eat each one in turn, taking small bites in order to savour it! (As it's quite small though, it would be possible to take about three large bites and it would be gone!)
When you bite into one you get a mixture of crunchy wafer biscuit and very dark chocolate. This makes a nice combination and makes the overall effect quite crunchy. The chocolate does taste quite bitter which I love but is probably not to everyone's tastes. Also, I don't think you would want to eat more than one biscuit in one sitting because it does start to leave a bit of an after taste. The other thing I always like to do is to eat them straight from the fridge. This gives a cool sensation to bite into and also makes sure the chocolate is very firm.
Overall, I do think these biscuits do make an enjoyable treat although I would have to say they are probably not my favourites. In fact, Sainsburys actually do a very similar biscuit - Double Take - which I think is just as nice if not better!
AT the moment you can buy a packet of ten from Tesco for only £1.38, although at te moment, they are on offer and you can buy two packets for £2!
Summary: A tasty little snack

- 11/04/08 I too prefer the milk choc variety. I never eat a kitkat properly. I always nibble away at the end, then sides, then take off each layer, I have done this ever since I was young - I know that probably sounds strange, but I bet others do the same. Nicola x |
