Advantages: Dark chocolate

Disadvantages: A wanting wafer.

Oh how I did tire somewhat of the common milk chocolate KitKat bar that I used to so often munch between sips of hot Twinings tea during episodes of The Simpson's. So it was with some curious delight that I did discover Kit Kat Dark, a plain chocolate variety consisting of 65% dark chocolate (although little indication is given of how much cocoa mass this includes) that allows me to participate in a deeper darker ritual. The Kit Kat remains a very popular confectionery. According to the official website, if all the Kit Kats produced every five minutes were stacked on top of each other, they would reach higher than the Eiffel Tower.

Kit Kat is a truly classic British brand which continues to be one of the most popular chocolate bars in the UK. The Kit Kat was invented by Britain's Rowntree confectionery company back in 1935. Sure it became a global brand when the Rowntree company was taken over by Nestlé, but Kit Kats are still churned out at factories in York, and Nestlé has several production sites across Europe. There are now many varieties including the catastrophic peanut butter experiment. But the Two fingered Dark has potential and is clearly aimed at passionate lovers of dark chocolate. In the usual red packaging the two regular crispy wafer fingers are foil wrapped in the traditional way for freshness.

Although I find it difficult to resist rich bitter not-too-sweet chocolate, which goes a long way to improve the lacklustre milk chocolate variety, I still feel as though Kit Kats don't taste as nice as they used to and the chocolate coating is a bit too thin for my liking. I have a conspiracy theory that when Nestle took over the brand they tampered with the recipe in order to reduce costs. The wafer biscuit has a satisfactory texture but has an unpleasant stickiness and in my opinion still needs improvement. When all is said and done, it is quite an average wafer.

Kit Kat bars claim to be free from hydrogenated fat, free from nuts and eggs, free from preservatives, free from artificial colours and sweeteners, and are suitable for vegetarians. Each two finger bar contains 106 calories, Sugar 8.5g, Fat 6.1g, Saturates 4.1g, Salt Trace <1%.

Have a break. Have a KitKat. The present price for a Kit Kat 2 Finger Dark 9 Pack at Tesco is £1.35, which works out at 15p each.

Summary: Better than the milk chocolate biscuit but still room for improvement.

I think you simply HAVE to be British to be able to fathom the mystery and allure of the kit-kats.

It might be that I simply don't like any choclate covered biscuits (I even eat Jaffa Cakes by eating the sponge bit first and the jelly in chocolate second).

I agree with your conspiracy theory - pretty sure it's not the only brand that's done it though. Ayesha x
