Advantages: Slightly better for you calorie-wise

Disadvantages: Tad bitter

I absolutely love normal Kitkat particularly the original four finger milk chocolate bar though the chunky one is nice but sometimes I find the amount of chocolate overwhelms the biscuit taste. I have also tried the peanut butter version and liked that but I am not generally a fan of dark chcocolate as I prefer the creamy taste you get with the milk variety.

A Kitkat Dark will normally cost about 50p at the newsagent but I often see multipacks for about the £1.50 mark and have seen those sold 2 for £2 in Sainsburys.

The Kit Kat dark comes in a dark brown wrapper as opposed to the traditional red which empahsises the cocoa within. On the front there is the big red Kitkat logo and the calories per bar is given as 236 which is only marginally less that the standard milk chocolate which surprised me a lot.

As with the original Kitkat the bar has four fingers which are just snapped and split apart. Each finger has several layers of light biscuit surrounded by dark chocolate. The biscuit is fantastically crunchy yet light, not as heavy as a standard biscuit but lighter than wafer. The chocolate is indeed very dark and the cocoa taste was right at the forefront. Apparently they use cocoa from Papa New Guinea and the Ivory Coast. However as with most dark chocolate it was just a bit bitter and though it didn't ruin the taste completely I missed the rich and creamy texture of the milk chocolate.

This bar has actually won a Consumer Survey of Product Innovation 2008 award but I can't say I was blown away by the concept of this product as lots of bars have a milk and dark version. For my part though I wouldn't turn it down if offered to me free, I don't think I'd choose to buy it on a normal basis. I'll stick to the original.

Summary: Prefer the milk chocolate version
