Advantages: Looks appealing, centre has a orangey tang.
Disadvantages: Sickly, combination of flavours does not work.
Wandering round my local discount shop as I tend do in the day before paydays bout of poverty I come across the Kit Kat Seville Edition. I have never been a big fan of Nestle chocolate and tend to find it all a little bit sickly sweet but the Kit Kat Seville edition promised, "An explosion of flavour in every bite". A heady claim methinks but a picture of oranges and the inside of a chocolate covered wafer oozing with caramelised orange swayed me (that and the fact it was twenty pence rather than thirty-five).
Wrapped it looks like an orange Kit Kat Chunky and is around the same size. As I peel open the wrapper I reveal a slab of chocolate that looks precisely like a Kit Kat Chunky, thick and brick like but generously sized. I am disappointed at a complete lack of smell. Considering the claims of flavour explosions I was expecting the smell of Seville itself. The chocolate has barely any aroma and I start to become disheartened by my purchase.
Nonetheless, this is still chocolate and it would take a stronger will than mine not to eat it regardless so I take a bite. This is seriously bizarre. The chocolate is thick and rich but has a lack of milk flavour that makes it just the wrong side of sickly. Inside is the wafer associated with Kit Kat and this tastes good and crunchy. Nestled (excuse the pun) in between the wafer and chocolate is some orange liquid. This stuff is liquidised marmalade, it is tangy and bitter and you can truly taste the orange. I love marmalade and if you do this taste is for you but it is considerably sharp in contrast to the sickly sweet chocolate of the Kit Kat itself.
As a combination this chocolate just does not work. I can't help but feel that if the bitter orange taste had been wrapped in the dark chocolate of say a Cadbury's Bournville or Black Magic then it would have been a truly fantastic taste. As it is I struggle to finish the bar and have no intention of buying another. If I am going to indulge in a fat content of 23 grams per 100 grams I would like to make it something a little less sickly next time.
Considering the ingredients include lactose, yeast, salt and an E number for good measure I would suggest this would be unsuitable for most allergy sufferers and those with intolerance's. Don't worry though, your not missing much!
Summary: Good job they are limited edition!
