Advantages: really convenient, nice colour & flavour, versatile
Disadvantages: synthetic food
If I wasn't so old I would have thought I was pregnant because I've been addicted to cheese slices for the past few weeks & can't seem to get enough of them!
I don't usually like synthetic, pre-packed foods & am a great fan of 'proper' cheese but there's something about cheese slices & my favourite ones are Kraft Dairylea Thick ones which cost around £1.20 for 8 slices.
The pack is as shown in the photo & each of the 8 slices is individually wrapped in cellophane with a more sturdy (a bit fiddly to open) outer layer. Each square is kept really fresh due to the packaging & it doesn't 'sweat'.
One slice weighs around 25g & contains 69 calories which is good but also contains 5.9g of fat - there's a low fat version available for those watching their weight. There's 'extra calcium' in the product which helps maintain good teeth & bones plus protein & carbohydrate.
I like the design of the slices which fit on a standard sized slice of bread but found I need to use 1 1/2 for Warburtons & other larger loaves.
The colour is nice & 'cheesy' & not as bright yellow/ orange as some of the cheaper ones are. The texture isn't 'plasticy' either & there's no aftertaste as I've found with some.
Obviously you don't get the same 'cheesy' flavour as you would do with the 'proper' stuff but the slices satisfy the need for something resembling cheese. There's no need to weigh or cut it if you're on a slimming diet & you know the nutritional values by examining the label.
I like them in sandwiches, either plain or with a bit of Branston or salad but also love them toasted under the grill and watch the little bubbles appear & pop - yum!
I've also used them on half-cut baked baguettes as part of a quick fake pizza (using tomato puree & Italian herbs etc) & chopped up in salads, on top of burgers, cauliflower cheese etc so they can be fairly versatile.
The only criticism I'd make is that after eating I often feel thirsty so I'm guessing that there's probably added salt but, to be fair, most processed foods make me feel I need a drink after eating.
summary
~
- well packaged & convenient to use.
- ideal for quickie meals.
- tasty & just the right colour & texture for me.
- reasonably healthy (compared to some) but low-fat ones are obviously better for you.
- great to have in stock & these are my favourite cheese slices.
Summary: imho the best cheese slices around
