Advantages: Tastes nice and is lactose free
Disadvantages: Expensive and hard to find
**What is it?**
Lactofree is a soft cheese that is said to be 99.9% lactose free, the sugar in milk that causes allergic reactions in many lactose intolerant people, including myself.
It is very new and hence very hard to find, I am lucky enough to have my local supermarket stock it - sometimes.
**How does it work?**
The milk is filtered first to remove half the lactose and then lactase - the enzyme which breaks up the lactose sugar, is added to make the lactose simpler and easier to digest.
**How does it taste**
I was tempted to try this after I saw it on the shelf, but I was worried it wouldn't be too nice. I was pleasantly surprised, it tastes creamy, and slightly tangy as soft cheese should. It doesn't taste any different than 'normal' soft cheese, but I'm not a fan of soft cheese anyway, I prefer hard cheese, which is also nice. If you like soft cheese, then you wont be dissapointed. Although it carries a steep price tag and is very hard to find.
**Does it work**
In small amounts I can stomach this soft cheese, in larger amounts it can make me ill, but you couldn't eat too much of it anyway as it is very rich and creamy.
**In Conclusion**
If you can afford it AND you can find it, then go for it, you may have to look high and low for lactofree products (especially the yoghurts) but when you find them, they really are worth the effort and price.
Summary: If you love soft cheese and are lactose intolerant then this ifor you.
