Leerdammer is a Dutch semi-hard cheese made from cow's milk that has an aging time of around 3-12 months ( mature Leerdammers min. 15 weeks). The cheese is produced in South Holland and was originally named after the town of Leerdam in the Netherlands. Leerdammer was launched in 1977 as an alternative to Gouda and Masdammer so it is realtively new compared to well-known & traditional cheese. It is a semi-hard contiental table cheese , excellent with ham, salad, red wine etc . The flavour is sweet and nutty. As time passes, the taste intensifies and becomes more complex. How great it is to live in Britain! One very good reason not to live in America is the cheese... Mild, bland, textureless synthetic stuff thats either bright yellow or plasticky pale! Stateside, cheese is merely the stuff for topping pizzas, finishing lasagne or for seperating cheeseburgers from other burgers! Here in the UK, we have a great tradition of producing and eating great cheese. We can boast regional distinctions as strong as accents, cheese of all colours, cheese which crumbles, cheese with bits, and cheese which stinks!
