Advantages: Healthy, vegan alternative to meat

Disadvantages: Don't taste of meat, per se

Ah, Linda MCartney and her vegetarian range... when these were launched in the early nineties there was a farm-fresh style advert with a crow singing her name. The sadly passed away wife of an ex-Beatle, famous for healthy and organic vegetarian living is surely the perfect endorser for a decent meat substitute.

And these really are a decent meat substitute. I'm not vegetarian and I do like the traditional banger sausage, yet eating these is a sensation in themself. It doesn't taste like pork or beef but has that slightly mushroomy, tofuey taste. However the sausages are flavoured well and I've always quite enjoyed the taste of Quorn, beancurd and the other typical meat substitutes.

They also cook up well - 12 minutes from frozen under a grill should have these sausages ready to accompany a big bowl of mash and I find they work just as well in pasta dishes, sandwiches, toad-in-the-hole. Actually pretty much any dish you may have used real sausages in, these meatless alternatives work wonders.

You get 6 of these for under two pounds in most supermarkets and they seem to be of better quality than the competition. Also I think they may have changed their recipe in recent years in order to be healthier, though tastewise I haven't noticed a great difference.

Summary: Great alternative to meat sausages. Easy to cook and flexible in recipes
