Advantages: Errrr... will give you a sugar rush?
Disadvantages: Poor quality
I'm usually quite a fan of Lindtand Sprungli. I love their dark chocolate bar, which is so full of cocoa that it cracks like a whip when broken. So I was surprised and disappointed when I tried these recently to find myself not wanting to finish the packet. I expected that someone who knew how to make a decent bar of chocolate would produce less wimpy, more chocolatey sweeties!!
First of all, let me define what I mean by chocolate in this context. Chocolate is made of cocoa. The higher the proportion of cocoa solids in it, the better quality the chocolate. Don't get me wrong, I love a Cadbury's Dairy Milk as well as the next person. But the proprotion of actual cocoa it contains is pretty tiny - it's more of a sweet than a "chocolate bar" - in fact, in some countries, they're not even allowed to call it chocolate. (One thing to note here is that when many manufacturers label their chocolate, they give "percentage cocoa" - this includes cocoa solids like cocoa butter, a fat, in with the dark, rich stuff that makes great chocolate.)
Like Dairy Milk, these Lindor chocs aren't really chocolate at all - they're sweets. At least they're fairly labelled, though: "cocoa solids 31% minimum. That's not a lot at all. Unsurprisingly, pop one of these truffles into your mouth, and there's just the vaguest hint of chocolate, certainly not enough to give you that chocolate high. What you're more like to feel and taste is creamy cocoa butter... and more creamy cocoa butter. There are no figures for fat content on the packet, but you can tell it's extremely high. They're extremely sweet, deluging your mouth with sugar. It's a bit like eating very sweet, slightly chocolately flavoured double cream.
Given that they cost around £5 for 200g, this is disappointing. That's pretty expensive for something of this kind of quality. If you want special truffles, I'd recommend that you splash out a bit more and buy Charbonnel and Walker or Godiva. If you want a cheaper chocolate hit, buy Green and Blacks.
Summary: Poor quality, and way overpriced!

- 07/01/08 We have a load of these at work from Christmas, and I have to say I quite like them, although I wouldn't buy them myself, and can't eat more than one - that's probably for the best! |
