Advantages: Good combo of ingredients, good texture.

Disadvantages: Poor quality chocolate, too sugary and without enough flavour.

A chocolate bar... you can't really go too far wrong. I think I would really struggle to find a chocolate that I would ever rate under, say, three stars. That's purely due to my always-hungry sweet tooth. However, there is still a wide range between those chocolates that really scratch that decadent chocolate itch and those that leave you feeling a little like the kid at Christmas who asked for an Xbox and got a board game.

I have found recently that my taste in chocolate has begun to change. Perhaps it is part of aging and the maturing of palette (read: a much-needed detour from the the-sweeter-the-better attitude of the young and pre-diabetic), but I have found that more and more I prefer dark chocolate to milk, can't really stomach white chocolate at all, and generally prefer that my cocoa fix has either nuts or perhaps mint - something to break up the pure chocolate taste. As a result I have found myself choosing the one-serving candy bars less often and buying blocks of dark, preferable almond, chocolate with the weekly shopping. Only every few weeks now - I am working on weakening my addiction!

I have tried the Lion bar a couple of times, usually after sport or when I am absolutely starving and in need of an energy hit. It has the combination of nuts, wafer, caramel and chocolate that I have always really enjoyed in the past. However, while usually achieving the goal of sending the blood sugar levels soaring I generally find Lion bars to be rather unsatisfying. The biggest problem, I think, is that the chocolate is not of a good quality. It has that very sugary taste, and almost buttery consistency of a lower quality chocolate. Any good chocolate will taste sweet but also a little bitter (obviously more bitter the darker it is) with a strong flavour of cocoa.

Add to the chocolate, which is already to sugary for my taste, a very sweet but not especially flavoursome caramel, and you have a bar that is more likely to leave you wanting more than feeling satisfied. And I don't mean that you're wanting more in a good way! I find that when I really crave chocolate it is usually because my body is lacking something, whether it be just sugar, but usually I think it comes down to the anti-oxidants that are in chocolate. When you eat a food that you've been craving and you only crave more, to me that really indicates that the food doesn't have what it is supposed to have in it!

Aside from my moans about the poor quality chocolate, I would just say overall that the Lion bar is not as good as others on the market. The Cadbury Picnic bar, for example, is pretty much the same concept - caramel, nuts, wafer, and chocolate, but it manages to be both more true to the flavour of each of the ingredients (you can actually taste the peanuts and caramel!) and more satisfying.

So, basically my problem with the Lion bar is a personal one - I prefer chocolate to be darker and the separate ingredients to each have their own taste. The texture of this bar is good - both slightly crunchy and chewy, although it does get stuck in your teeth a bit! And there will be a lot of people who really enjoy it. To those people I say, try the Picnic and compare the two, to the rest of you who have similar taste in chocolate to me, stay clear!

Thanks for reading.

Summary: Good for the sweetest of sweet tooths.
