Advantages: Taste yummy, chocolate, free from milk, gluten and wheat, I can eat them!

Disadvantages: Cost

Being lactose and wheat intolerant means I'm always on the look-out for new food products to try (that I can actually eat without getting side effects). So when I spotted a box of Livwell 4 Double Chocolate Cake Bars, I just had to pick it up!

Livwell are known for their "Free From" products and these Double Chocolate Cake Bars are free from gluten, wheat and milk, meaning they are perfect for me! However, I never get too excited about items that are "free from" as sometimes they can taste awful. However, I was in for a surprise with these.

The cardboard packaging shows some delicious chocolate cake bars and the picture on the box actually matches the cake bars themselves (as well all know, sometimes the packaging looks better than the item itself). So they look good, but do they taste good?

Described as "bursting with chocolate chips" I thought these might just be that little bit more exciting that your average "free from" item. Peeling back the paper case and being careful not to spill any crumbs, I bit into one of the 4 chocolate cake bars... The chocolate chips were evident as was the "double chocolate" flavour. Knowing this chocolate is plain chocolate, rather than milk chocolate, I thought I might not enjoy these, but I was wrong.. They're delicious! I'm sure if I gave one of these to somebody who can eat milk, wheat & gluten without saying anything, I don't think they'd know the difference! I'd give somebody one, but there's only 4 in a box so they're all mine!

These cake bars aren't gooey like some cake bars, but they're not dry either. I only just managed to finish one cake bar, but that's probably because I'm not used to having that much chocolate these days (as most dairy-free chocolate tastes awful, in my opinion). I did, however, find that they crumble easily, but the papercase helps to catch them.

You get 4 of these cake bars in a box and when you open the box you'll find 4 plastic pods perforated so you can seperate one of the pods from the rest. This makes them handy to seperate just the one and pop it in your lunchbox to take to work/school. You then simply peel back the top film of plastic to remove the cake bar and it's paper case. Next... Eat and enjoy!

These cake bars are suitable for coeliacs and vegetarians, but do contain egg and soya, and are made in a factory that handles nuts.

As with a lot of "free from" products, these aren't exactly cheap... I paid £1.99 for this box of 4. This is simply the price we have to pay for "free from" goodies that actually taste nice! I've since been back to the shop to buy another 3 boxes!

Summary: Chocolate cake bars for people who can't usually eat such things!

have you registered with the companies that make some of the products? A friend of mine said that she registered and got some sample free and she can get lots of things on prescription too! x
