Advantages: Low in Sodium
Disadvantages: Its still salt which means it will never be good for you!!!
Theres a lot of hype nowadays about reducing the amount of salt intake we have in our diets and im all for it. However, I do believe that a small amount of salt does add a really nice flavour to foods and im sorry, no matter how much Im told not to use it, I just can't have chips without salt & vinegar - its just not natural!!
I found Lo-Salt in my local supermarket and thought id give it a go as it seemed like a good compromise. I still get my food flavoured with a small amount of salt when needed but by using Lo-Salt you are taking in a lot less sodium with it.
Lo Salt is available from most stores and is recognisable by a white plastic circular tub with Lo Salt in red/blue writing on the front. The tub is 350g and is priced at around £1.20 per tub depending on where you shop.
It has a best before date of around 2 years on it which is great as I found that since I do use it in such small quantities, even in a large family home a tub of Lo Salt can last up to 18 months so although it is one of the most expensive brands of salt available it will last you forever and has more health benefits than other salts.
The packaging boasts that Lo-Salt contains up to 66% less sodium than other branded salts and a high amount of sodium in your system can lead to problems such as high blood pressure. It is also high in natural potassium.
I like the lid on this as it is a circular white plastic piece with 2 different types of opening on it. A pouring opening, a sprinkler opening a large hole to pierce the top with in the first place, meaning you can opt for whichever piece you wish depending on what you are using the salt for. With the sprinkler option it means you can sprinkle salt over your food without the salt coming out too quickly and smothering your food in salt which is always an advantage.
I don't personally see any difference in taste between Lo-Salt and any other salts I have used in the past and if it makes just that slight bit of difference to my health then it is worth the extra cost.
Apparently 100g of Lo-Salt contains 13.1g sodium, compared to 34.6g sodium of other leading brands. The recommended daily intake of salt is just 6g for those who are interested.
In summary if you are going to have salt in your diet in some way then I would recommend this. Salt isn't good for you no matter which variety you buy, however this is probably the best of a bad bunch and as said before it lasts forever so give it a go. Recommended.
Summary: Recommended as salts go
