Advantages: Great store cupboard standby, Not too high in calories

Disadvantages: Probably very bad for your health!

When visiting Tesco I try to avoid buying cakes and biscuits but every now and again I just have to succumb. Such was the case with Lyles Golden Syrup Cakes. They were sitting on the shelf between Mr Kiplings Bakewell Tarts and Tesco's Chocolate Mini Rolls and seemed to be calling to me. As it happens they were on offer - 99p a pack, so they just happened to slip into my basket.

I got home and, as per usual when I've struggled round the supermarket on a Saturday morning, shoved the kettle on for a coffee, while I unpacked my bags. I just couldn't resist - the golden lion on the packet, set against the dark green background, winked and beckoned so I ripped into the packet.

My immediate thought was that the cakes were very, very small and that it'd probably take the whole packet to satisfy me. However, having taken the first bite I found that they were extremely sweet - syrupy sweet in fact. The cakes were quite dark in colour (probably due to the syrup and treacle which were listed amongst the ingredients) and gooey to the touch. On biting into it, a small amount of golden syrup was dispersed into the sponge to make the cake even gooier. It was absolutely gorgeous. I normally find that bought cakes tend to be a little on the dry side, but that little drop of golden syrup moistened it up a treat.

The cake was only about three or four bites big but, in all honesty, it was so sweet and rich that I couldn't have managed a second.

That night I hadn't had time to make a dessert so I chucked a couple of the cakes into the microwave for a few seconds to heat them up and served them up with a bit of custard.

I now often buy these cakes as a "store cupboard standby". Ideal for a snack, or a dessert, but I've also found that they're perfect if you're on a diet. No, I'm not mad - if, like me, you have a passion for anything sickly sweet, these are the perfect indulgence. T
hey're less than 150 calories per cake so you can satisfy that craving and yet do little damage to your diet.
