Advantages: its ok
Disadvantages: marzipan, sweet
Lyons Battenburg cake is not one I eat often it is really a cake I remember from my childhood Saturday teas at my Grams. When I was a child I lived in a thatched cottage it was next door to my Grans I suppose it was really a semi-detached cottage. On a Saturday my Gran would have all the grandchildren to tea in turns. When it was my cousins and my turn for tea I remember the ham sandwiches the home made jam sandwiches some home made cakes and there would always be a Lyons battenbugh cake. This was bought as a treat but sadly I think I was the only grandchild who did not really like this cake, the reason why / marzipan.
Anyway this 2230 gram cake sat its plate a brick shaped slab cake completely wrapped in yellow marzipan, Gran would cut my cousin and me a piece. On my plate would be a square slice of this cake marzipan round the outside. This cake looks attractive cut into square slices as the cake when cut is like a chequerboard alternate pink and yellow squares of cake stuck together with apricot jam,
Now I would peel of the marzipan and sneak it to my cousin. He would eat it rapidly. I would then break of one of the squares think it would be pink and eat that. Then eat the other pink square after eating the pink squares I would eat the yellow ones .The cake is a fine textured sponge cake tasting a little of the marzipan and just like a plain cake. The Apricot jam used to stick the cubes together is not a strong flavour and I would quite enjoy the cake like this. The best cakes of course were my Grans homemade ones. I am not desperately keen on Battenburgh cake although I do eat it with the marzipan stripped of, actually now as a grown up I have been known to eat marzipan still not keen on it but do not dislike it as I did when I was a child.
This cake is one I have seen at childrens parties we had one at school a little while ago and I did have a small piece not over keen as I found it a bit sweet and the marzipan well too almond.
The Battenburg cake was named after a princess from Battenburg in the early 20C. The name survived the anti German feelings in the two wars.
This cake costs just over £1 in most supermarkets it comes in a cardboard tray and wrapped in clear plastic.
The Lyons factory first made this cake. Lyons started marketing the cakes it sold in its teashops in the 1950s and built a cake factory in 1976 it built the largest cake factory ever in Carlton. I this was sold out to Rank Hovis Mc dougal in 1995.
I think this cake is one that is fairly popular but not really for me ta, well if you are sitting next to me when I am eating one can I give you the marzipan please . .
Thanks for reading Mary

- 09/06/05 I was the child who gratefully received all the marzipan. I keep away from it now as it is fattening otherwise........:-)
