Lyons Battenberg Cake

This has been on special offer recently in Tesco’s and since the offer has been on I have been able to eat single handed 4 whole cakes. The offer being buy one get one free and for a price of £1.29 pence, which gets you the two cakes, I think it is well worth it.

The Lyons Battenberg cake has been around for years and has been one of my favourite cake time treats for many a year. The fact that this cake is so sweet really satisfies me as I have a very bad case of sweet toothitis.

The Battenberg Cake is made up of a super soft sponge centre that is in two different colours and four separate squares of colour giving the cake a chequered look. The two colours are a gorgeous pink and a light yellow shade. The whole sponge centre is wrapped around the outside with a good thick layer of marzipan. The two ends of the rectangular bar of cake are left exposed so that you are able to see and enjoy the colours of the chequered centre.

The cake is also dusted in a slight bit of sugar over the marzipan which mixes with the marzipan layer and makes it even sweeter to taste. The sponge inside has got to be one of the softest sponges around. I love the fact it always tastes so soft even if you cut half and go back for more the next day is has a super fresh taste and texture. I can’t notice any difference in flavour between the two different colours and I think the only different thing that has been used is a bit of food colouring.

The outer marzipan layer is very nice and I think you either love marzipan or you hate it, I am one of those people who just can’t get enough! The marzipan is very smooth but very sugary and you can feel the grains of sugar grinding on the teeth. The outer layer works so well with the flavours and textures from the sponge centre.

For the price that I paid for the two cakes I would say I am well please with my purchase. Hopefully the deal will still be on next time I take a trip to the supermarket. I think this is the perfect teatime treat for anyone and I should think that most people have either tried it or been put off because they don’t like marzipan. However I love this cake and I definitely will continue to buy it as long as it’s out.

Summary: a great piece of cake
