Advantages: Marzipan
Disadvantages: Very fattening
Battenburg is one of my (and many others) favourite cakes. Admittedly I am quite a cake person in general but this is my number one cake. These also come in mini versions where you get five in a box but they just don't last long enough around me.
Battenburg cakes are very recognisable. Normally they come in a cardboard sleeve, in this case blue, and are wrapped in cellophane. The sponge in each slice is divided into quarters like a check pattern and is coloured yellow and pink so the yellow square is diagonally opposite to the other yellow square and the same for the pink. There is a thin layer of apricot jam in between all the squares to hold them together. Surrouding the sponge is a thick layer of yellow marzipan. In a way this sectioned cake reminds me a bit of an angel cake. Health-wise, unsurprisingly, this cake is quite bad for you at 175 calories for 40g, which is about an eight of the cake. It costs roughly £2 to £2.50.
Probably my best bit of Battenburg is the marzipan. It is rich, incredibly sweet and very moreish. In fact I could eat this on its own. The sponge is very good too however and I love the fact that it is multi coloured. It is light and sweet with a very slight fruity taste coming through which gives a little zing to the cake but the overwhelming taste of the cake is sugar undoubtedly. My only complaint would be that when you cut a piece it rarely all stays in one place and often bits of the marziapn fall off or one of the sqaures of sponge separate from the rest. This is a small niggle however and I still very much rate this cake.
Summary: Very nice
