Advantages: low in calories, delicious
Disadvantages: moreish - can you just have the 1 bag?!
The other day I was feeling in a somewhat creative mood and decided to make some Malteser cake, which, by the way is amazing. Obviously the key ingredient to this recipe is....Maltesers! For those of you who aren't aware, Maltesers are a confectionary product from the Mars confectionary company and they are basically chocolate covered balls of honeycombed malty goodness. Quite a large quantity of Maltesers was needed for the recipe so I sent my brother to the corner shop and he came back with one of those cinema style bags which was 135g in weight. There was a 1 in 10 chance that you would win a DVD and we did! This bag cost £1.80 from our corner shop but would probably be cheaper in the supermarket.
Because it was the cinema style pouch packet that we went for, it was somewhat bigger and more durable plastic than the 37g bags. The packet was the trademark red with pictures of Maltesers on it. Some of them had been bitten into to show the consumer what to expect by way of the honeycomb interior. Some of the Maltesers had halos above them too. Maltesers is written across the packet in white with a yellow hue around the outside, outlined by a chocolatey brown outline. One Malteser with a halo has white rays coming out from it with the words "the lighter way to enjoy chocolate" written in red.
Now for the taste test....the chocolate itself is smooth and creamy, then you bite into the honeycomb malted ball in the middle and it is nice and crunchy. As the Malteser sits on your tongue, you can feel it fizzing and melting in your mouth. The combinationf of the smooth and creamy chocolate works really well with the crunchy honeycomb centre. I really shouldn't have eaten so many out of this bag due to their destiny as Malteser cake, but they are extremely moreish! I had to bash them to pieces for the recipe and it was definitely not easy.
Nutritional vaalue per 37g (standard bag):
Calories - 187, 9% of your RDA
Sugars - 19.7g, 22% of your RDA
Fat - 9.3g, 13% of your RDA
Saturates - 5.6g, 28% of your RDA
Salt - 0.15g, 3% of your RDA
All in all whether eating a packet for a treat or bashing them up for Malteser cake, they are delicious. At less than 200 calories a bag they are ideal for a not-so-naughty moment of weakness on a diet or even for the kids lunchbox. They also do snack sized packets as part of variety packs, so there is a size for everyone. Fantastic for a cinema snack too but buy them before you get there, those places are so expensive.
Summary: now you need to find a new way to be naughty......
