Advantages: Taste great, biscuit centre reduces cals

Disadvantages: Hmm, nothing really

Mars Maltesers. Now then, as a married man, I can safely say that I spend a good deal of my time 'popping' to the shop for some chocolate. Anything specific? No, thanks, just some Maltesers...........So, do I get to eat them much? Do me a favour. You think I'd eat a woman's chocolate? I value my life, thanks! Especially where Maltesers are concerned.

So, what are they exactly? Well, as the ad goes, they're lighter than ordinary chocolate. Is this because it's a special type of choc that is lighter than air? No, it's because the shiny ball of choc you see as a malteser has, under its chocolate surface, a crunchy biscuit full of air pockets. This is what make sit lighter than ordinary chocolate: it's got air in it!!!

Is it good, though? Well, the answer is yes, of course. The choc is nice, and there's enough choc around the biscuit to give the taste of it all the way through eating it. The biscuit inside is nice and crunchy but not overly so, and the whole combination of flavours is lovely. A regular sized packet of them will set you back around the 50p mark depending on where you get them, which is about standard for a chocolate bar anyway. You can get them in bigger bags or boxes.

Nutritionally, you get about 500 calories per 100g of Maltesers, which makes them quite good in comparison to other chocs when it comes to the weight ratio. This is partly due to the airy biscuit content, and is a great way of getting a choc fix without piling on too many calories. It's a lovely snack, and one my wife absolutely adores. I do sneak a few here and there, I was lying earlier when I said I don't get a look in, and I occasionally choose them for myself as well. I rate them highly, and recommend them if you want a choc snack.

Summary: Biscuit balls with a chocolate coating

500 kcal/100g does seem to be about the average for chocolate - handy that, as it makes calculations easier!
