Advantages: Fun, taste great!
Disadvantages: None
It's official, Percy Pigs are cool and this years must have item according to Vogue magazine! Well, if it's good enough for Vogue, it's good enough for me!
Percy Pigs are a line of sweets from Marks and Spencer. The name "Percy Pigs" has now been trademarked by Marks and Spencer which just goes to prove its popularity. Apparently they have been around as long as before the First World War! No wonder they are such a British favourite.
Basically the sweets can be described as soft gums made with fruit juice. The sweets are actually in the shape of a pig's face. The ears have a pink jelly consistency and the rest of the face is more of the foamy type jelly sweet consistency. I think the pig shape makes them really fun to eat. I tend to bite both of the ears off and then eat the rest of the sweet. Each sweet is probably 1 ½ cm by 1 ½ cm. I think the original flavour tastes quite like strawberry but it also has a bit of a violet taste to it. They are quite sweet but not sickly tasting, are very chewy and very moorish. The 100g pack is the smallest and contains probably about 11 Pigs and you can definitely eat all of these in one sitting.
The Pigs are sold in lots of different shape bags. I recently bought a 100g bag for 79p from Marks and Spencer which I think is quite a good price. The bags also come in 170g and larger. You can also buy bags that contain smaller versions of the sweet and these are called Percy Piglets, a very cute name in my opinion. There are now some variations on the Percy Pig theme as Marks and Spencer obviously saw it as quite a money making operation. Percy Pig and Pals now contain Percy and his friends in different flavours such as cola and grape and Penny Pigs come in a lemon flavour.
I think part of the appeal is that these sweets seem very fun and cute. The bags are extremely easy to spot. They are a bright pink colour with a cartoon picture of a pig on the front in a barn. Then the rest of the bag is coloured green obviously for a field with little daisies on it. The bag is probably aimed at kids but I think grown up kids can appreciate it too!! You can always find bags at the check out (great product placement) and often dotted throughout the shop as well.
In fact, now that Marks and Spencer have trademarked the product they have come out with a whole host of items in the "Percy Pig" range such as a Piggy Bank (very clever marketing but also very cute, I'm thinking of getting one myself!), bed linen, birthday cakes and pencil cases.
As I just bought the 100g bag I will give you the nutritional values for that bag as they are well spelled out on the bag so even if you buy a bigger bag you will find the values.
Each sweet is 25 calories, quite a bit I guess but then there is only a trace of fat. If you manage to eat the whole 100g bag then this will set you back 335 calories but again, if you just look at it as a treat once in a while it's not too bad and remember Vogue says they're cool so you must buy them!!

- 21/09/08 I always seem to get these as they are right by the till! I can eat 3 packs in one day, so 2 4 1 offers are lethal. |
