Advantages: Great taste, quality gum sweets

Disadvantages: Sweets are still sweets, so sugars and calories

Despite constantly being in the news about their top chiefs not doing good enough jobs, reshuffling and general borderline success, I consider Marks & Spencer to provide high quality goods, whether it be clothes, food or other accessories. As long as they maintain their quality, I will be more than happy to pay slightly higher prices for their goods.

One product, however, that I consider to be well balanced in terms of price with similar products in other 'supermarkets' and general retailers, is their Percy Pig sweets. It costs around the 80p mark for a 100g bag of chewy flavoursome sweets, and what you get is a bag of about 10 or 12 sweets, each about 5mm in depth, and with the front having the markings of a pig's face, such as snout, smile, eyes and ears.

They are soft grape and raspberry falvoured gums, and you get a fruity explosion when you eat the first one. Most of the contents of the sweets are glucose syrup, sugar and pork gelatine, although there is a layer of fruit concentrate for the ears, giving them the appearance and taste of something more resembling jelly, although they are still gummy in texture.

They are lovely sweets, and I much prefer getting these than other various brands of sweets. They just seem a bit better than your general Haribo, although sweets are sweets and it's rare that you get sweets that aren't sugary and still retain the taste. There are gelling agents and natural flavourings used here to maintain the shape and flavours, and you'll get around 25 calories from each sweet eaten, with sugar levels at just udner the 6g mark per sweet. There are no artificial colours or flavourings.

I like these sweets, and so do my wife and son. We get them whenever we got into M&S, which isn't regular or often, but used occasionally every now and then for clothes and for a special treat in terms of food. M&S also have a further bag of sweets called Percy Pig and Pals, and you get cola cows as well as orange and raspberry sheep added to the grape and raspberry pigs making up this bag. There are further elements to it as well, ranging up to even include a Percy Pig Hamper, which I think is around £20.

Summary: M&S' own brand of quirky sweets
