Advantages: Fruity, real strawberries inside, helps fairtrade producers
Disadvantages: Price,
Do you often feel you need something a little different once in a while; well I did the other day. I was bored, of my plain or occasional marmite toast and fancied something else that would set me up for the day. Whilst in Marks & Spencer doing a bit of browsing, I saw this jar of strawberry conserve. At £2.49 it is fairly pricey, but as I do like to support 'Fairtrade' produce, and seeing the logos on the label, I popped it in my basket.
The label on the front also has several pictures of juicy strawberries, whilst the back contains all the information you would need about the contents, and the packaging. Both the jar and lid can be recycled.
Around the labels you can see the jam inside, which is a nice rosy red colour, some jams I've seen in the past have been quite dark, but this is not at all. You can see many seeds interspersed through the jam, which appeals to me, I'm not keen on artificial, or seeds that float/sink.
The first opening ensures the jar is ok, if it doesn't pop, and the lid can be depressed, then reject, Good! Mine is ok, I've never had a jar of anything yet that I have had to reject, thankfully!
Inside is the glossy fruity jam, which gives out a lovely aroma, the jam has a good 'set consistency to it and on scooping a little out, found that it contains some decent sized lumps of whole real strawberries.
The taste - well it tastes of strawberries, when it first hits your lips and tongue it is slightly sharp, but this disappears to give the fruity, sweet and delicious flavour you would expect.
I love the taste of this jam, and although the lumps can be a little annoying when spreading onto toast, the taste more than makes up for it. This I feel is a good quality jam, which would go very well with a scone and cream for afternoon tea, or spread thickly in a sponge cake.
Each 340g gram jar contains 'Fairtrade' sugar, strawberries, gelling agent: pectin, citric acid, acidity regulator: E331. With 54g fruit in every 100g. The nutrition Information states Kcal 235 and sugar 57.6 which do sound rather high, but considering these figures are based on 100g product, do you know anyone that would eat that much jam in one go?
As a product I would eat every now and again, I would definitely have a jar in the cupboard, I would be happy to spend a little extra on this product, knowing that it is good quality and as a 'fairtrade' product I feel good knowing that the producers of 'fairtrade' ingredients are receiving a fair deal, so that they can enjoy a better standard of living.
