Advantages: Tastes delicious, nice and crunchy, good texture

Disadvantages: ----------------

Since rejoining Weight Watchers a few weeks ago I've found that my diet has got decidedly boring. I love cooking and my favourite foods are the healthier options of fish and vegetables, I am so missing my tasty night-time snacks though and it was causing me to ruin my diet because come 9pm I always crave something nice to eat in front of the tele.

I went to Tesco the other day with the express intention of buying myself a stock pile of nice tasting snacks which are still healthier than the average packet of McCoys or a Whole Nut.

I love Marmite so was thrilled when I saw they have developed Rice Cakes flavoured with Marmite, you can buy them in the individual bags as shown above or larger cakes in a cylindrical packet such as Snack A Jacks are packaged in. I bought the big packet because I can eat them with a salad as well as for a snack in the evening, whereas with the little ones you're restricting yourself to munching them like a bag of crisps.

I was slightly dubious when I opened the packet as although I've eaten plain rice cakes for years, I've only ever eaten the flavoured Snack A Jacks ones which I'm not too keen on. The smell that came out of the packet is the lovely aroma of Marmite and it made my mouth water as soon as the smell hit my nostrils.

I ate one plain on it's own and it was absolutely delicious, not at all like usual diet food! The rice cakes are crunchy and have a harder and more compacted texture than Snack A Jacks, the actual puffed up grains of rice are visibly smaller too which I think makes them lovely and crunchy compared to the crispier texture of Snack A Jacks.

The flavour, to a Marmite lover like me, was delicious and such a satisfying savoury snack. These Marmite Rice Cakes are a brown colour, not the usual beige of plain rice cakes, and it's the colouring that provides the lovely Marmite flavour. It's the distinct rich flavour of proper Marmite only more toned down and much smoother on the palate. The whole rice cake is infused with this delightful flavour, but it's the surfaces which will give any lover of Marmite the intensity of flavour they crave.

I thought they were lovely and with only 61 calories and 0.4g of fat in each rice cake (that's 1 Weight Watchers point) they are not going to spoil all my hard work on my diet. I have tried them spread very thinly with cheese spread and this was lovely, also with a slice of cheddar and a thin slice of pear.

I got mine from Tesco and they cost around £1.39 so while this isn't particularly cheap, there are enough rice cakes to last for a while and my pack has kept without going soft for seven days now so they will last.

Summary: I really liked these rice cakes, they beat plain old 'slightly salted' hands down!

I'm not a big fan of marmite but I love these rice cakes, probably because the flavour is more subtle. Have to say the dogs love them too!!!
