Advantages: Deliicous, a change from plain Cheddar, robust Marmite flavour
Disadvantages: Very high in calories and fat, only available in these very small Bites
The day before my granddaughter's birthday party my niece telephoned me to ask if I wanted her to pick up some Marmite Bites as she'd found a pile of them reduced in Asda from £1.26 to just 20p, she gives them to her son and said they might be nice on the party table for the little ones. Of course, at that price I told her to bring as many as she could carry as there was still a few days left on the 'use by' details and I reasoned that what wasn't eaten could be sent home with the various children attending.
Marmite Bites are basically small circular pieces of Cheddar cheese which have been flavoured with Marmite, they come in a small net back and the cheeses themselves are covered in a wax coating similar to the Babybel I usually buy. They appeared absolutely perfect for our buffet table and I set about creating a pyramid of them, not unlike the Ferrero Rocher one you see in the adverts.
They are absolutely delicious, I've eaten them before but don't tend to buy them very often which is surprising as each time I eat one of these lovely little cheeses I realise I love the flavour much more than 'normal' plain Cheddar!
The cheese is a strange colour for Cheddar, it's a orange/yellow/brown hybrid which actually doesn't look terribly appetising simply because it's so different from other cheeses I regularly buy and eat.
Once you've taken a bite though, providing you like Marmite, you'll realise how delicious these small cheeses are. The Cheddar is mild and creamy, while the overriding flavour is of the Marmite. Now, the taste of the Marmite is nowhere near as strong as I thought it was going to be although for a fairly mild flavour it manages to infuse the entire Bite and made this Marmite lover practically drool after eating the first one!
The Marmite Bites are very salty in my opinion and I needed to have a drink as soon as I'd eaten the first one, this is obviously because Marmite itself is a very salty food and also the Cheddar itself used in these Bites seems to have a salty undertone. The Marmite and Cheddar have been well blended so that each mouthful is rich and extremely flavoursome, even a couple of guests at the party who don't eat Marmite as a rule managed to get a few of these down them - with my 90 year old Uncle proclaiming the fact that he intends to buy his first ever jar of Marmite after sampling these delicious little cheeses!
I wish they made this cheese in bigger blocks as each small Marmite Bite is gone in one go, which is a shame as it's so wonderfully tasty. I have a feeling it would go wonderfully in a sandwich, although the Bites are so very tiny that you'd need a fair few to fill your buttie up enough to get a proper taste - also, how delicious they would be melted down on toast. Oh, if we were able to buy a big block of Marmite Cheddar the possibilities would be endless!
Each Marmite Bite contains 81 calories and 6.7g of fat, which is actually very high indeed considering how small the Bites are and how many you could munch on without even thinking about it. Perhaps that's why they don't make bigger blocks, I have just worked out that a 200g block of this cheese would contain 810 calories and well over 33g of fat - gosh, us Marmite lovers would be the size of barrels as this cheese is so wonderfully addictive that I imagine one single block would not last very long at all.
Summary: Anything which gets Uncle Brian's cantankerous seal of approval must be good!
