Advantages: healthy

Disadvantages: not everyone likes it

Marmite is that brown, sticky stuff that comes in black jars with yellow lids. It has a salty taste and is pure yeast extract which is a by-product of the brewing industry.

You can spread this on bread, toast, or crackers, or even add it to soup, stews and gravies. That is, of course, if you like it.

Never has any other savoury spread known to man, evoked such adamant reactions. There are two distinct camps. You either love it with a passion and this review will have your mouth watering for it, or you hate it with a passion and won’t bother reading the rest of this revolting offering!

There is no in between. No one is ever indifferent to this product.

In 1902 the Marmite Food Extract Company Ltd came into being. In 1903 marmite won two gold medals at the Universal food and Cookery Exhibition. By the outbreak of the First World War Marmite was well established and recognised for its nutrition and health benefits. It was supplied to troops serving in Mesopotamia to guard against beriberi.

So, I don’t care whether you like Marmite or not, you should use it. It will protect you from beriberi! It is also cheap because you only need a tiny bit in a sandwich, making packed lunches very economical. Force it on your children, don’t listen to them. Marmite is good for them.

Seriously though, Marmite is an excellent source of B vitamins which help protect the cardio vascular system, urinary system and central nervous system. They can be beneficial in depression, and post viral recovery.

Marmite is 100% vegetarian, and it contains no fat or sugar. A 4gram serving is just 8kcal and although it tastes salty there is no more salt than in it than there is in the slice of bread you spread it on.

It comes in three different sizes and the smallest 25grams. I’m not sure of the weight of the larger ones as I only buy the small jars.

Marmite is sold in most countries of the world but I buy mine in Tesco and it the last time I bought some it was on offer for 79p.

So, which side of the Marmite divide do I fall on? I’m for it. I love it on toast and my favourite lunch is a sandwich made with thin white bread lightly spread with Marmite and filled with fresh watercress. Yummy! Makes my mouth water and it’s so very healthy.

Summary: Cheap, healthy, protects nervous system, etc

If you eat lots for a fortnight before you go on holiday, it's supposed to help prevent attack by mosquitos who apparently don't like the changes it makes in the 'smell' of your skin. I've never been convinced that this stuff is a by-product of brewing - used to work for a company that had previously had a yeast extract business.
