Advantages: Tasty , good vlaue , low fat ,full of B vitamins , good for you , a little goes a long way
Disadvantages: None for me , but may taste too strong to some folks
I absolutely adore marmite whilst my husband cannot stand it . To anyone who has never tasted it the flavour is very distinctive , unmistakable and hard to describe .
One reason Marmite is packaged in such a small jar is you only need a thin scraping of it as the flavour is very strong . I must admit I like a little more but too much and even I would would squirm .
WHAT IS MARMITE
Marmite is a very dark brown colured , sticky , thick substance which can be spread on bread and crackers or whatever really . It is made of yeast extract and has a savoury , meaty flavour . I especially like it spread on toast or crispbreads with a thin coating of margarine or butter . When I am dieting I am not averse to eating it on rice cakes with a thin coat of margarine also .
NUTRITION
As far as I am aware it is suitable for vegetarians and vegans , and as such can provide many valuable nutrients . A 100g of Marmite provides 871kj but an average serving is only 8.5g and comes in at 74kj . This means that in the calories we usually count at 19 calories a serving it is very low . The amount of fat it contains is negligible and the largest ipart of the product is protein .
As the jar says 'Made from Yeast ( richest natural source of B vitamins) and natural vegetable flavouring . No artifical colour , flavour or preservatives '
MARMITE
Marmite has been in production and on sale since the early 1900's . Today it is produced by the Unilever company . Since I was a child in the fifties I have not noticed any change in this product or it's packaging . Marmite is bought in a dark brown almost black jar which matches the colour of the product . The photo of the jar above is accurate and iappears as I always remember it to have been .
Apart from using as a spread it is useful for making stock or adding to soups and gravies . If you do this it has the effect of 'beefing' it up without adding any meat . This is really good when catering for vegans or vegetarians.
Personally I think the B vitamins packed in Marmite are beneficial to all but especially women . Many of these B vitamins help keep us well and mood free during menstruation .
A few years ago Marmite was advertised as 'The taste that's good for growing up kids' or something along those lines .I feel this is very true . The vitamins added to the fact it is a high protein low fat product can only be good for children .Although the flavour is strong I loved Marmite even as a child .
RECOMMENDATION
As I have already said I love Marmite . If you are a Marmite virgin try some . However just try the tiniest bit first as it's an acquired taste .
If you do like it and want to buy the smallest jar which contains 125g and will set you back somewhere over £1 . However it will last ages . It does last a long time , even when opened , and requires no refigeration but watch out for the expiry date .Marmite does come in larger jars and now has associated products such as Marmite flavoured crisps and snacks .
To my mind Marmite tastes better when a jar has just been opened . It has a slightly runnier consistency then and a full flavour . If you have tried Marmite and don't like it you probably never will . However trying for the first time it may be one of those things you wish you'd discovered sooner .
Personally it is the food I would have if stranded on a dessert island . After all I would not need any cutlery or other foods just my finger .
Summary: How do you eat yours?
