There can be few people who haven’t heard of marmite; afterall it’s been around since 1902! Marmite is made from yeast extract, a by-product of beer brewing. Marmite is a good source of B vitamins so is really useful for anyone who is anaemic as well as being a good source of folic acid.
The Marmite advert says that there are those who hate Marmite and those who love it-no middle ground! I am in the love it camp and seriously couldn’t live without it. I can however understand why some may hate it. The taste of Marmite is strong and unique, there really is nothing like it. I suppose the taste can be best described as a yeasty salty taste. You only need a scraping, too much will make your mouth burn.
Marmite is easy to spot on the supermarket shelf. It comes in a bulb shaped brown glass bottle with a yellow lid. The picture on the front of the marmite jar is of a French cooking pot called a marmite! All a bit random if you ask me! However I do take a jar when I go on holiday to France !
Marmite is not that appetising to look at to be honest. It is a thick dark brown paste. The smell is unique too, best described as yeasty. However don’t let the appearance put you off, marmite is delicious!
Marmite has to be my number 1 choice to eat on hot buttered toast; there really is nothing to beat it especially after a night on the wine! Marmite is also great in cheese sandwiches, or with watercress. I like to add a teaspoonful of marmite into my spaghetti sauce; it really gives it a great flavour. My children both love Marmite although I only give them a scraping as it does contain a lot of salt.
Marmite has a really long shelf although we do get through it fairly quickly in our house! There are alternatives available such as Tesco’s own version and the Australian vegemite. I have never tried the Tesco version so can’t comment but the Australian version has caramel instead of yeast extract and doesn’t hit the spot for me.
Marmite is widely available and costs £1.19 for a 125g jar and £2.18 for a 250g jar.
Summary: savoury yeast extract spread
